Need help deciding on Crossfire setup

Thread Starter
Hiya guys i just sold my Red October build already. And its time to build again. I am going with roughly the same setup on the new build.Question i have is on the Crossfire setup. Should i go 2x 2 gig 6950's which i hear can be flashed if i needed to later to the 6970 or should i just spen alot more for 2 6970's ? I am hoping you guys say the 6950's rock becuase its a big price difference.but at the same time i dont want to regret it later. Also i have ran sli before but this will be my first crossfire setup. Please tell me it plays nice with games.

Here are specs i am planning on:
Amd 1100t black edition will run roughly 4.1ghz
Asus Crosshair Formula iv
some ssd for operating system
Corsair Dominator Gt 2000mhz 8.8.8.24 1T (already own)
1000+ watt ps haven't decided on yet

Any suggestion on anything would be great. I plan on ordering everything probably tomorrow night.after i get some feedback from you guys of course.

Also is there a better place to buy the 2 cards then from newegg? Newegg has no deal for buying 2 at the same time.

Are you running single or dual screens?

From past experience with dual 4850's the XFire would only run on fullscreen applications (which I found annoying, usually played in windows so could access other windows faster/easier). The latest catalyst driver at the time also wasn't very good for dual screens either.

Not sure about current cards/drivers though

And what about the 'single' slot dual processor GPU's?

6950's are great if you want to save money. But, you have to find the right reference cards to ensure they will unlock properly.

If you can spend a little more money and want peace of mind, then definitely go w/ 6970. It will overclock better, and you don't have to worry about flashing anything (heard memory timings are off on 6950 after flash). You also won't void a warranty if that's important to you, and may be able to expect more life out of the card.

The new MSI Lightning 6970's overclock like a boss. You will be getting equal to or greater stock SLI 580's performance should you go that route.

All that said, 6950's may be overkill for you already depending on the games and at what resolution you play at. If you're planning on hanging onto the cards for a while, I'd go with a 6970 for the performance and warranty.
