Definitely good routes to go to put that RAM to use. Also the VM is a good idea too. You could get crazy and run a bunch of VM's with 256/512MB RAM, or more depending on the OS.

This is a good program. I know some people here hare used it with great results. There are others. I've used an earlier version of it a long time ago.

Linux definitely, any flavor really. Try out VirtualBox, it's a bit easier than VM ware. Plus the advanced features (not that you'd get into/use them) cost money, but VB works a charm.

just curious, what programs are u so reluctant to have to reinstall? I sometimes format and reinstall on a whim, I just back up most of my media to a second hdd and say goodbye to Windows. Programs install quick nowadays. ^_^
