HAF X Questions

Thread Starter
Ahhhh yes, I've ordered a HAF X to replace my beloved HAF 932. Yep. People told me not to, but I did. They said the upgrade wouldn't be worth it. They told me "Just get those awesome demciflex filters that have custom made ones for the haf 932 specifically!". I was going to do that....but at a pricepoint of 60$ with $30 shipping, and given that I got the HAF X for $110 on a pricematch at NCIX.com...I thought...bang for buck much?

Enough of my life story. I have a few questions about the case itself, because I know its fairly popular, and I'll list them in numbered form for the convenience of the fine people of OCN.

1. Just how well do the dust filters work? Will I notice a "world of difference" compared to the 932 (which is dust filter-less)?

2. I noticed the VGA support bracket is built to handle two video cards snug against eachother on the motherboard....although I've always thought this would cause heat issues having the cards mounted one on top of the other so close like that. Your thoughts?

3. Related to the hot swap bays but not directly to the case itself (and because I have zero experience with hotswap drives), does ANY hard drive work in a hotswap setup? Or does it have to be a special drive? I was thinking about ordering a couple of 2TB samsungs while I still have the chance

Thank you for your time, back to Portal 2 co-op for me.

I will comment on the 2nd part:
Yes, it is exactly for this type of scenario (ie 2 or more cards with little empty slot in between) that calls for this extra push of air from the front to force more ambient air to reach the intake fans through the small gap.
If I remember correctly, CM first advertised this case for GTX480 SLI setup.

Of course, cards (eg HD 6990 or GTX 590) exhausting hot air to the front might not be beneficial.

Ironically, I have a Haf X and my girlfriend has a Haf 932. The dust filters on the Haf X do a halfway decent job of grabbing dust. I bought mine in November and have had to clean the dust filters at least 4 times. So yes, they definitely do work. In comparison to the Haf 932, I've had to clean her case out once or twice since January.

So to answer your question, yes, you will definitely notice a significant difference. Just make sure you intend to clean the filters regularly because the dust can really pack on after awhile.

Yes the dust filters do work, it keeps most of the bigger dust out of the case; doens't really catch the fine dust though.

Hot swap bays are more a matter of your motherboard than it is of which drive is compatible.

The VGA holder isn't that useful unless you are moving your case around or you have some ridiculously heavy cards.

So...since I know so little about this, do you reckon that with my motherboard, and with these couple of Seagate Barracuda 1TB drives I got sitting here, I'd be good to go?

yeah just set the ports to ACHI mode because IDE doens't support hot swap.

i just rebuilt my system and used a HAF-X. 2 of the features i wanted i cant use.....arg.
the video card support bracket....utterly useless on some newer cards that are wider and/or not stacked side-by-side. the design is really a brainfart on coolermasters part. the bracket needs to be adjustable to accomodate a wider variety of card sizes. the other thing is the video card airduct....again....uselss unless you have a single card. not only does it block the power connectors on my 6970s but it also blocks the videocard fan intake on the bottom card, not to mention it hampers the ability of the 200mm door fan to get air to the cards. wow. big failure. imo, take the damn hotswap bays out. use 120-140mm intake fans (one at entry, one on inside) with a duct to the vid cards. make a shroud that accomodates crossfire/sli configs by making the shroud bigger. as it stand that whole part of the case design is a disappointment for me. im sure it would work out better if u only had one video card.
the rest of the case i like alot, although i think they should have made the fans a bit better and incorporated a fan controller so we had a wider choice of cooling vs silence.
i hope the dust filters work cuz that was one of the reasons i changed my case from an antec 1200.

I find the dust filters work great. I've had the case for almost two months and those filters have caught a lot of dust. To avoid having to take the filters out and clean them all the time i just put the dust attachment on the vacuum and give them a quick once over once a week. Haven't had to remove them yet.

As for the VGA support bracket, in my case it is a totally useless feature. I am running the Asus GTX580 Direct CU2 and it is one monster of a card. The bracket does not even come close to fitting this card and this card is one that could really use the support. So if you are running a larger card keep that in mind.

The dust filters are crap and barely work. Get some nylons and wrap your fans, works way better. You just have to go out and buy them. Haha
