Nope. Nothing can go wrong. That's why there's a bios switch, just in case things go wrong. It's foolproof.

well I have heard to really turn it into a 6970 you have to overclock the card. I don't know how the cooler can handle the increased speed. I don't know how much of a risk this is.

Can you really make a 6950 into the identical 6970, there must be some difference. I know for one the memory o the 6970 is higher rated for the increased clock speed, other than that I have no idea.

ok well anyway at the moment these are my options now what do you think.

MSI HD6950 Twin Frozer II OC $265+tax: cant unlock, respects my wallet, I can pick it up at fry's and won't miss out on several days of gaming, and it scales excellently when I want an upgrade in the future

EVGA GTX 580 $470+tax: fastest single gpu, does not respect my wallet, I won't miss out on several days of gaming.

or...

wait and order a card off newegg or amazon: I would either purchase a 6950 that could unlock, but more than likely I would get a 6970, but I would do alot more research before making up my mind...

currently I am leaning towards the 6950 from frys.
