I'm not sure. I had problems with my 5770 with an older antec neopower psu (losing display when going to 3d clocks) but solved all my problems by overkilling it with a corsair tx 850w. I might still try another psu with the gigabyte board / 5830 so you can be absolutely sure, other than that I wouldn't know what to say. I have the same F4 bios and have not experienced any issues with the bios. Do you think you might've bonked the bios flash?

Only other thing I can think of is pcie bandwidth. The pciex1 slots share with the pciex16 (x4 electrical) so they cannot be used at the same time. When testing the x16(x4electric) pcie slot make sure you unplug any sound cards / what not if any from the pciex1 slots.

yeah i'm pulling my hair out as to why it works with my 6950, but not the 5830. the bios is definately ok - when the 6950 is in everything is fine (i even installed win7 no probs). the psu was being used on my old puter and used with the 5830 when it was installed there. i'll try my 900w psu and see how it goes, but i'm sure it'll be the same issue.

i have the 5830 in the x16 slot and a wireless card in the one above it, so there is something in the x1 slot. but that's odd as well. if it's not supposed to work, why would it work with the 6950? and i had the same wireless card and 5830 in my other pc which has a 890fx-ud5 motherboard. but i'll try again with the wireless card out and see how that goes, but i'm not full of hope frown.gif i cant remember if i tested it without the card or not. i think i did, but will try again as i'm not sure.

gee this is frustrating

The second x16 slot won't work with your wireless card, the first one should be fine. That was a comment since you said you were testing the second x16 (x4 electric) pcie slot.

Do the 6950 and 5830 use the same power connectors from your psu? I assume the 6950 is a 6pin / 6pin connection. Some 5830s look like 8 pin / 6 pin and some are 6 pin / 6pin depending on model. Maybe there is a short on the 8 pin psu cable? Again just throwing out ideas, would definitely check with your other psu.

yeah the vid card is in the first slot - it's x16 after all. was just trying the x4 just incase.

yeah the 6950 and 5830 i have have the same 2 x 6 pin power and i was using the same plugs with both the 5830 and 6950.

i'm really really thinking the board is dodgy. what a waste of time and thermal grease lol
