Looking for a good decent MP3 player without annoying software DRM restrictions

Basically title says it all. I have an ipod classic 30 gb, but it freezes up a lot and I really want to replace it with something else. Basically I just want to be able to easily transfer music on and off the device without annoying middle man software. My requirements is literally just a pretty good interface and a shuffle feature. Good build quality and sound is nice too. Looking to spend about 50$ and I need probably somewhere around 4 gb of space. If it can use some kind of formatting that will show up in linux that would be a huge plus. Any help would be really appreciated, thanks smile.gif.

My advice: Sansa Clip+ - I paid some 40$ for a 4GB version and it has mini-SDHC slot for up to 16GB of additional storage. It has easily the best sound quality in this price range according to reviews and my own subjective opinion. It works like USB storage if you want to, drag & drop MP3s, audio books, podcasts, etc. The battery lasts for about a week if used for 2-3 hours a day. The file system is Linux friendly FAT32.

Cheers

Try to find a Sanza Fuze + refurb, I picked up an 8GB refurb and rockboxed it and it works great. I wouln't bother with the new touch screen version, it costs more and rockbox doesn't seem to be working for it.

Excellent, thanks. Other suggestions?

...the Fuze+ is practically the same player, but bigger, without a clip, slightly better battery life and a battery-draining color screen with photo/video capability.

cheers

I used a Clip v1 and v2. They both had problems, the battery exploded on v1 and the second would stop getting recognized; sadly both died in the same year. Regardless, I bought a Clip+.
I bought an iPod mini, replaced with with rockbox, and a CF card; never had a problem. You can do that with other iPods, just not the classic. You can also buy an Android phone, it will do all that and more.

I use a 16gb Sony MP3 player which is great. You can get a 4gb one for about $60.00 from Amazon....I know it's $10.00 over your budget. I transfer music from my computer/cell phone to my Sony MP3 player all the time with no problems....Just my 2cents.gif
