but what would I have to give up if I go with closed headphones? Isn't open headphones generally better?

I see that there are 3 diff versions of the DT880, now is it worth it to go with the 600ohms keeping in mind that this will probably be the last time I'll buy headphones? Unless they break that is
Your STX won't be able to drive the 600 Ohm version anyways. The resistance of the drivers will be way to much for the pre-amp in the STX.

The STX will drive the 600ohm version. Will it do it well is another question.

You won't be getting the most out of the amp, but you will be able to use the 600 ohm version with the STX.

Recommend an opamp upgrade if you're gonna' use headphones that require amping.

In general, I think closed headphones give you bass and isolation while open headphones give you a larger soundstage and clearer highs and mids (real audio people need to chime in here and correct me if I'm totally off). It's not to say each type of headphone can't accomplish what the other can, it's just what each one is more geared towards.

I don't think you can really classify either open or closed as "better". It depends on what you use the headphones for and what you listen to. Closed headphones and open headphones each have areas they perform well in.

I can maybe try out the 250ohm version at my local guitarcenter or a store nearby called TurntableLab. I still don't know whether to go with the 600ohm version or not.

In all honesty I have no plans in getting an amp, I bought the STX to be a one stop kinda thing.

I was under the impression that headphones with that much resistance would need a dedicated amp stronger than what the STX has to offer. I guess its just misinformation on my part.

gonna go see if Tunrtablelab or Guitarcenter will let me try on the DT880

I'm just kinda confused about all this ohm talk, if I have no plans in getting an amp then the 250ohm would suffice?

what if I opt for the 600ohm version, will my STX drive the 250ohm better because the 600ohm is pushing the amp in the sound card?

I'm not all that certain anyone actually knows if a DT880 600 ohm will sound poorly compared to a DT880 250 ohm when driven out of an STX. I suppose later down the line I could get a high impedance headphone and hook up my STX to my Little Dot MKII tube amp but that might not happen this year. I'm also not certain if a high impedance headphone will sound all that bad out of an STX as opposed to STX -> amplifier.

The native impedance for the STX is 32 Ohm. So I guess, to rephrase my statement earlier, you can drive headphones with greater impedance, but the maximum volume will be extremely low.

the lowest i found for the 250ohm is

http://www.google.com/url?q=http://w...=0CBwQgwgwAzgA

and 600ohm is around 320 hmmm
