Win7x64 -> XPx64 what will I lose ?

Thread Starter
On this new machine (in the sig) I installed Win7 x64 on it and I've given it a few weeks but now I'm totally sick of Win7 and all it's BS so I want to go back to XP (still the best version of Windows for me).

I know that I can't go to 32 bit version of course, that'd be crazy, but if I go for the x64 version of XP, will I still get the full access to all of my 16GB of memory? Will XP be able to make as good usage of my four cores as Win7 does? What about the SSD, will I get a drop in performance because XP doesn't have TRIM support?

Just wondering what the downsides will be, moving from 7x64 to XPx64. If any.

Not being able to play BF3....

Why don't you setup a dual boot and run both?

I do not have any experience on win XP 64 bit version. But curious what problem are you facing with win 7 64 bit. I came straight from win XP and absolutely loving win 7.

XP is an old OS, while it has patches to make it better, it will never be as efficient as 7, which was built from the ground up (from Vista up) to be the most efficient as possible. So if you can't stand 7, go back to XP, but don't expect anywhere close to the performance of 7.

You can dual boot, just partition your HDD and install XP first, then Win 7. I have no idea what issues you're running into, 7 is the best OS I've ever used, and I started on 3.1.

Side notes: XP x64 is the fastest OS if you run gaming benchmarks, and it will run DX9 games faster than other OSs as well. I can't stand how ugly it is anymore, and I hate that you can't drag maximized windows around. No DX10 or DX11 support is a pretty big issue if you're a gamer.

You can always run XP mode if you want to get your ugly fix.

- the constant nagging from UAC
- needing to start things in administrator mode to make them useful
- explorer behavior (just about everything about it)
- search (can't right-click and search for files anymore, only "in" files)
- so many XP programs that won't work that I'd either have to pay to get an upgrade or I don't want an upgrade (Corel PhotoPaint 8 is a perfect example - it's my favourite graphics prog, even though I have Photoshop CS3). Plus Acronis True Image 10, Partition Manager, oh there's several.
- [Windows VM] Virtual Machines suck in 7, they're much better in XP with MS Virtual PC 2007.

That's just off the top of my head, there's more.

I'm convinced that on the same hardware if Win7 is not taking advantage of some special processor/SSD features that XP doesn't have access to, then XP will out-perform 7 massively.

I just need to know whether I can make good use of my hardware from XP x64 or if there's some MAJOR power I'm losing out on.

in terms of the points why your hate win 7.

-turn it off in msconfig under tools tab
-no not if you have administrative rights on your user account
-you can revert back to xp mode in the themes and display settings
-you can add that to your shell via registry
-you can run them in compatibility mode by right clicking the exe and hitting properties. also there are version that work with 7.
-not true.

things you will lose

-a more robust os
-a more secure os
-a more stable os
-dx 11
-newer hardware and software made will not work in xp. due to drivers and support.
-xp 64 sucks compared to win 7 64. xp 64 never got the support win 7 did from the start.

You would loose DX11 if you even care for it.

You may have some browser issue with flash in 64 bit internet explorer, mayeb they sorted it now i dunno.

Also i had trouble finding an all in one 64bit Antivirus/Firewall that i liked and was free.

Thats all i remember at the moment as its been a year since i ran 64 bit xp

I also started way back (Windows 3.0 and OS/2) and I've liked them all up to XP. I avoided Vista on my last three new machines and stuck with XP on them.

This time I figured I'd give up and allow 7 a chance. Well, I gave it 3 weeks, didn't like it. I don't think XP is ugly so I won't feel like I'm downgrading. It'll be nice to have an OS back that works properly and isn't trying to fight me on everything I do (or block me completely when it comes to incompatibility with XP apps).

I'm not a gamer so no worries on that front. Btw, why would you want to drag maximized windows around ? From one monitor to another is the only use case I can think of for that.

Sure, if I fight it, I can maybe make it behave more like XP, but if I'm seeing no advantages whatsoever to it, I'd rather put XP on it. So far there's only one positive thing I like about 7, and that's the snipping tool. That's it. One tiny little thing.

So are we saying that 7 doesn't enable any extra (Sandy Bridge) processor features ? and therefore XP x64 will take as full advantage of it and all it's cores ? I guess I can live without TRIM too.
