Win7x64 -> XPx64 what will I lose ? - Page 3

Windows 7 has countless features that XP x64 doesn't. Besides essential things like DX11 and TRIM support, check out this document for even more features XP lacks. "Under-the-hood" improvements also exist, like faster boot time and kernel improvements. Just FYI, Windows XP x64 was released in 2005, had the last service pack update in 2007 (SP2), and Microsoft no longer offers any support for it and never will. If you feel confident using an operating system outside of it's support cycle with possible unpatched security issues, then go for it.

Win7 64 has better driver support that XP 64bit...unless you know how to write drivers, I wouldn't even consider it.

I understand. And I agree, the shell in Win7 is awful. You can replace that though, too.

Re: The VM situation though - I don't think vms are slower in Win7. Win7 in a VM is dog**** but using a modern version of VMware running XP or Linux is basically native speed. The CPU overhead of Win7 is actually lower than XP, since Microsoft offloaded as much as possible to the GUI.

Lastly, for the search conundrum, you could either just press winkey and use windows search (which is why they removed the contextual menu) or if you want to use a better search, I've had fantastic luck with Everything (http://www.voidtools.com/) which might interest you.

I just don't think XP x64 will even install on your box, let alone run correctly after you install. We're talking about an OS that views SATA and AHCI as an exotic technology that requires drivers on a floppy disc.

not reading everyone elses opinions so here goes mine

Winxp came out in 2001. That was 10 years ago. Your hardware is less then a year old.

Winxp x64 WILL support all of your ram, but at the cost of dx10/11. Granted there are patches to make it work, but its just that, an unsupported unofficial patch.

initial release of x64 xp was rough on users, driver support was horendus, and sense it came out, vista was right aroudn the corner. Many users had to customize and tweak x64 vista drivers to use on xp. This is because its based off of server 2003 [ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888733 ], not really intended to be gaming on, neverless an os pushed to the average consumer. Thats why many 2004 ere top level OEM machines were sold with 3gb of ram, and up until win7, so many oem machines were still sold with 3gb of ram. x64 caused numerous headaches until win7 came out.

x64 also simply emulates x32 programs slowing them down. vista and win7 has far increased the performance of WOW64 [what is wow64 http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...8VS.85%29.aspx ] [performance loss http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...8VS.85%29.aspx ]

All around win7 is better then xp. Xp is also not fully capable of fully utilizing your multi cores/threads despite reporting them as in use.

just my

also, i use xp as a client and win7 as a host almost daily. Couple of my online college classes dont recognize IE 7/8/9 and therfore cannot be used, so im using xp and IE6 in a vm to do my online work, as well as emulating old games that 7 cannot.

I'm sorry, but reverting to XP64 because of a few, easily-fixable annoyances in Win7 is just plain silly. XP64 was never really designed to be a frontline consumer OS, while both the 32 and 64-bit variants of Win7 were. Others have already named the numerous performance and feature benefits that a modern OS like Win7 provides. Additionally, XP64 is not able to leverage the new instruction sets (AES-NI, AVX, ATA TRIM) that modern hardware provides.

Alright, I give in. Hands up. White flag.

Win 7 stays

I've been trying 3rd party search progs (you can see "classic shell" on my toolbar in that screenshot earlier). It's not as good as XP explorer, but slowly one by one I'm removing the annoyances. I'm going to try the XP theme next, see if it's more than just cosmetic (but I doubt it).

Drivers and support and XP x64 generally being poor win the day
