[Edge] Miyamoto Admits Wii Successor Is Coming

Quote:
“Don’t ask!” he said. “Even when the Wii launched we were developing new hardware, work on 3DS had already started. It’s a matter of when we announce it.”

Pressed on whether we can expect an announcement at E3 in June, Miyamoto said: “Please wait. Be patient until we decide.”
Also from a different site..(its in french, but eurogamer had a translated quote)

Quote:
"Yes, I have read rumours about Café," he said. "I want to say it's normal. You know, for Nintendo, as with the other platform holders, our job is to create new hardware.

"We think it takes five years to do interesting R&D. So, I confess there isn't smoke without fire. We always build consoles. You'll never see some of them.

"But you don't have to trust all the stuff you read," he added.
Please, please, please be of higher spec than the rumours - I'll buy your games anyway, but the shinier, the better!

The rumors state that it will have a tri-core IBM CPU like in the 360 and an RV7x00-class CPU. They're going for a setup similar to 360 because porting will be easy enough to maintain parity(Blow 360 graphics out of the water), unlike the PS3.

I'm guessing it'll be a 480-640sp(4770) @ 28nm.

It'll be ~ 40w for the 4770 or lower if they design to downclock it from 800Mhz(480sp 6670)

this.

I'd be shocked if Nintendo strays too far from the Wii's 20 W operating envelope.

Pros:
1. can at least match although likely exceed 360/PS3 hardware capabilities without getting too nuts in terms of hardware

2. can retain sleek console form factor

3. similar hardware increases likelihood of backwards compatibility with the Wii

4. won't be too expensive to produce (for instance the PS3 was sold at a $300-400 loss despite its $499-599 initial price tag)

5. hardware similar to the other current gen consoles will ensure plenty of 3rd party developer support from day 1 if only because it should be easier to port games.

Let's think.

They won't go much further from the 20W as bojinglebells said. Not conceivable on a family entertainment system like Nintendo's.
Let's say they'll put a 100W top this time.

Making an analogy on current computer hardware, that leaves room for a shrunk 4770 like BizarreRide said, and the remaining 60W can go:

To the motherboard (considering it has bluetooth and WiFi), which will take its good 20W.

To the CPU, that has 40W left. Seeing what AMD and Intel can offer now and taking the Opteron HE series into consideration (best processors in terms of power per watt processors ever), that gives room for a 2.6GHz quadcore approx while retaining the 45W TDP. I'm kinda sure IBM will be able to shrink their tricore PowerPC at 3.2GHz, so yes, it's very feasible they'll stay in the 100W level.

Interesting nonetheless. DX10 level GPU, hmmm... Nice start, Nintendo.

I'd sure hope that's the new console could outperform the PS3 and Xbox 360 while retaining a similar form factor if they choose. Typically that's what happens to top of the line hardware from yesteryears, they become smaller and more efficient.

As for backwards compatibility, that's Nintendo's main selling point, I doubt they'll ruin it. The thing about this, is it is somewhat hindering at the same time. The best examples of backwards compatibility come from the consoles being fairly similar to it's predecessor in hardware which in turn would not allow as big of an advancement in tech. I think what they need to do is move towards software emulation as Sony did with PSX games on the PSP. (As we've also seen from Sony, alternatives can be costly when using completely new hardware and having your predecessor built in)

Nintendo has always tried to be the "family" console so I wouldn't expect a huge price tag. Judging from the DS which released at $149.99 to the 3DS which is $249.99, I'd take a guess saying it'll be $299-$349 as the Wii was $249.99 at launch.

bojinglebells - You're correct about similar hardware most likely leading to easy ports, but from what I've seen (I'm not a huge console guy anymore) the majority of the ports Nintendo releases are all first party so I don't think it's nearly as important to make developing on the platform easier. The devs are going to have to lots of practice on release games to make sure those ports happen.

I personally think Nintendo needs to take a risk here. The certainly have the money and haven't really had a flop since the Virtual Boy! I'd love to see them make a real competitor to Sony and Microsoft, but I think that's just wishful thinking.

It is wishful thinking.

If you look at how well the Wii did, you can expect them to go with the same concept of casual/family friendly console. Honestly Nintendo has never been known for "serious" or "hardcore" games.

Yeah, that's true enough.

I'm just tired of seeing the endless ports/variations/remakes.

The nostalgia has kinda faded away now.

Nah, Wii 2 will be getting the PS3/Xbox 360 ports, since it's more powerful.
