I think they should just skip CDs or blue rays, and just stuff a cartridge with like 8gb of flash memory.. sort of expensive now, but it wont be soon, and game companies in the future wont be limited by disc space requirements, they can just toss some more gb's in there

R700 means that this consoles' been in development since around 2008.

Honestly this could be a huge blessing for us. Whether you think it's targeted at the hardcore gaming audience or not, the new Wii will have superior hardware to the other consoles. Even if the console uses something only 10-20% better than what the Xbox and PS3 use that's a massive increase when developers' are trying to get as much as possible out of it. And it has to have at least 1GB of ram, which alone is much more headroom.

Fact of the matter is, the companies that win designs for consoles always have road maps of their future tech. They use that for the designs of future consoles.
The high end GPU at the time of the PS3's release was the 8800GTX.
The 7800GTX was already a year and a half old by then, and using oudated fixed shader units.

Yeah, R700's age gap is larger, but the architecture is still largely based on R600, just like AMD's current GPUs.

based on a revamped version of AMD's R700 GPU architecture
This could be a very good thing depending on how modified the GPU is, after all, the venerable cypress architecture (HD5000 series) is basically a doubling of the same R700 architecture with a beefed up tessellation unit.

This same 'old' hardware came after the transition from DX9 to DX10, moving away from the fixed-function units of previous generations (such as the geforce 7800). This should bring the benefits of using a unified shader architecture, mainly for this; compatibility. This might result in more ports from PC (making developing games with PC as the main platform more attractive ).

Ohhh, low blow!

so Nintendo is putting out another low tech console. Not that surprising, that's been their standard operating procedure ever since n64.

then sony & MS will put out something that will crush it technologically months later & it will again become the novelty console. I just hope they have something big as far as innovation, because MS & Sony have already surpassed their motion controls. They cant get complacent & the wii craze is already over.
