Motherboard / CPU Advice Please

System Use: I don't do a whole lot but want a top-end machine. I play a few games (World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 when it comes out). I don't do video editing. And I do some graphic editing (Photoshop). I am just getting into water cooling and I've been using AMD CPU's for 10+ years and want to get into Intel OC'ing.

I was thinking about buying ASUS Rampage III Extreme and Intel Core i7-970 Gulftown 3.2GHz but I am reading the Intel Core i7 2600k might be better, for me, since I want to OC and game. i7 970 is better for heavy load (video editing) systems?

Can anyone recommend a top-end Motherboard / CPU for what I would like to do (OC and Game)?

I am willing to stick with AMD but it seems that Intel is ahead in the OC game at the moment. Of course I could be wrong. I haven't been following it that closely.

Also, I am building this new machine as a hobby. I don't NEED it but it's something I've been wanting to get into for years (Water Cooling & OC'ing). I get asked a lot why I am building this

For gaming primarily I would choose the 2600k as it as far better single threaded performance versus the 970. 970 would be better if you were doing video editing and such but as you said you aren't.

How heavy of a photoshopper are you? If you're just doing light stuff, you probably won't see any difference when editing. Your sigrig doesn't have all the normal info, but I'd look into a dual- or tri-monitor setup, GPU upgrade, or a better HSF for better OCing on your current setup.

Given your uses, honestly I have to say you won't see much in terms of performance boosts upgrading that CPU.

Thanks for the confirmation Yumyums.

Is there a reason I should go with a GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD7-B3 instead of ASUS MAXIMUS IV EXTREME?

@r31ncarnat3d: I just do light Photoshopping. I know I won't see a performance upgrade since I don't do much, but I want a top-end rig to see how much I can overclock my CPU, GPU, and RAM. My Signature Rig will be going to my fiance.

Here is my thread in the Water Cooling section of the forums: First WC Build - Looking for Advice. My original post has everything I'm wanting so far (nothing has been ordered for the new system yet).

EDIT: What do you mean my Sig Rig doesn't have the "normal" info? =/

Did you change something? I couldn't see the GPU earlier The info was just incomplete without the GPU (which really is a central part of a gaming PC).

Lol yeah, I figured that must have been what you meant I didn't fill that out because I just assumed people would know.

I plan on getting a SAPPHIRE 100282XTREME Radeon HD 5850 Xtreme 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 for this new rig. Just something decent for now, spending enough building it is already!

A 5850 can max out most of my games on my 1920x1080 display; it should treat you very well.

Good to know. Thanks r31ncarnat3d. I also use a 1920x1080 resolution.

Awesome

Yea, I just popped into BFBC2 to check my settings. I can play with all the settings on high, 2x MSAA, 8x AF, HBAO on, DX11 with no lag whatsoever. Given how BFBC2 is much more intensive than your games graphics-wise, I'm pretty sure you'll be okay with your games
