7800gtx vs 8600gt plus another question.

Which would be better.
7800gtx or 8600gt.
I got a 7800gtx for free about 20 minutes ago and want to know if i should take the time to remove my 8600gt and replace with 7800gtx or not. And if i did would have to use the 6 pin on the board with the pci slot.

Try out the 7800gtx. I doubt there have been drivers for it lately tho.

Way back when, everyone said not to upgrade to GeForce 8600s from their higher end GeForce 7 series cards, which is true, but the reverse probably is as well, especially these days. The GeForce 7800GTX might be slightly faster in older games/higher resolution/anti-aliasing situations, but I wouldn't be surprised if the GeForce 8600GT is a bit better in shader intensive/newer titles (not that either do newer titles well). If you're not pushing a higher resolution and/or playing older games with it, then I'd just keep the GeForce 8600GT in really because neither is better than other by alot in every area. The GeForce 7800GTX is probably bigger, noisier, and uses more power too.

Edit: I found this thread.

What 300W PSU do you have? The GeForce 7800GTX is probably going to care more if that's a cheap or weak unit.

What GeForce 7800GTX is it? The GeForce 7800GTX 512 (512MB) was a different GPU than the 256MB variant. Is it the standard (256MB) variant?

I just noticed your CPU and monitor, so I guess you're pushing a low resolution, or do you get away with 1600x1200? I would guess the GeForce 8600GT is probably doing okay, right? Just put the other in and test it. It's the best way.

Do you think i could move the cooler from the 7800gtx to the 8600gt? It looks beefy and cooler.

Something seems off. Shouldn't that GeForce 8600GT being doing better than 640x480 and 800x600 at low in those older games?

The PSU should have a label on the side. Take a picture of it, or note what looks like the name/model number.

I'm not sure I'd waste the time swapping coolers unless the current one overheats. They might not even be compatible.
