Asus 5770 Cu Core wont overclock very well

Hi all.

Just yesterday, i received my new Asus HD5770 Cu Core video card which replaced the HIS card i had which had issues with the fan

This card now works perfectly, except for the fact that for some reason, it doesnt want to overclock very well.

At stock clocks, the card runs perfectly fine, but even if the core is overclocked to just 900mhz, my screen turns grey while gaming.

My old HIS overclocked to 950mhz and was perfectly stable, and ive seen that this card can overclock to that speed aswell, but mine simply wont. Temps never went above 70c in games and hovered at around 75 to 76c in furmark.

What could be the problem here? Does anyone else have this same card overclocked?

Also, i cant get voltage tweaking to work in MSI Afterburner with this card. Ive enabled it, but it just wont show up. It remains greyed out. Voltage tweaking works in Asus Smart Doctor but i would much rather use Afterburner.

Thanks.

Nathan.

Some cards just do not overclock well its kinda luck of the draw, and I did not think Afterburner worked with AMD cards I could be wrong though. Have you tried it with the ASUS utility and have you tried different drivers? What is the stock VID of the card this might explain some of why it does go very high be default. Low VID voltage and you might be limited to how high the overclock will go. The old card might have had a higher reference voltage allowing higher clocks. What are your load temps with this new card just wondering?

If you can't manage to get unofficial overclocking working in MSI AB (I can't either with the newest release) use sapphire trix, by default it doesn't have a cap on core/mem clocks or voltage. While the card might not be the best oc'er some voltage might help.

The cards VID voltage is 1.25 volts. My old HIS cards voltage was 1.20. I think the GPU load temps are around 70c, but im not too sure if that is correct. 70c is what afterburner is telling me, but the catalyst control center says the GPU is at 60c. What one should i believe?

Also, i found that the core is stable at 900mhz, as long as my memory is at default speed, and my memory is stable at around 1300mhz, but only if the core is at default. Which is odd, it seems i can only overclock one or the other. Voltage control works fine in Asus Smart Doctor, but it wont enable in MSI After Burner, i can overclock using After Burner though. Anyone know why this may be? I have the latest version of Afterburner.

Edit: I had the Catalyst 11.2 drivers, but i have now changed to the 11.4 Preview drivers, witch dont help.

Some cards just don't clock well bud. Sorry for your luck.

In other news -

I had 2 5770s with 1.1v VID or something like that. Both hit 1000/1400 on air (stock cooling) wiht ease. Sold them off and guy broke a world record with them XD

damn. Ah well, it seems to be running stable with the core at 900mhz and the memory at stock. Because when i initially started this thread, i had both the memory and core overclocked. Its weird though, if i have my video memory overclocked to say, 1300mhz, and the core at stock clocks, its stable. Or if i have the core overclocked and the memory at stock, its also stable, but overclock both the core to 900mhz and the memory to 1300mhz, and it crashes almost instantly.

But ah well. Im going to get a second 5770 in a week or so to run in crossfire, so i probably wont even need to have the cards overclocked. I cant wait

@ Lord Xeb. Thats cool how someone broke the world record with those 5770's. What frequencies did the guy get them to?

Ok, now i have the second video card (have actually had it for awhile). But it too does not overclock correctly. The "Voltage Tweak" feature on both these cards does not work. I cannot tweak the voltage in any program, including Sapphire Trix. I tried running both cards as the single card, but overclocking and voltage tweaking just will not work.

This is not acceptable, as Voltage Tweaking is actually a feature of these cards and they both should be able to overclock very well. (other people have had success with these cards)

Whats wrong here? At first i thought the card might be faulty, but both do the exact same thing. Could it be a faulty or incompatible motherboard maybe?

Edit: I have tried resetting my BIOS settings back to default which didnt help at all. I was also playing Dirt 2 not so long ago with the clock settings at default for 45 minutes, then out of nowhere, the screen turned brown with vertical lines. I am using the latest Catalyst 11.6 Drivers with 11.6 CAP1
