Have you seen 17/18" laptops? I got one before I went off to college 3 years ago and I kind of regret it. On one hand, the screen real estate is great for writing papers and programming. Also, the portable gaming is good for when I'm on vacation. However, the low battery life is always a PITA and the size of the system can be cumbersome, resulting in me not taking it to class as often. Also, larger screen size = TA sitting behind me seeing me checking my email instead of looking at lecture notes and glaring at me after class.

I don't really regret getting the big laptop I suppose; it's definitely been useful. However, if I could do it all again I'd get a 14/16" laptop with an extra hour of battery life and build a gaming desktop (which I ended up doing anyway). Even with your monetary cap, this may end up being a cheaper option for you. You could easily do a $500 laptop + $1300 beastly rig.
