ram frequency with locked CPU multiplier

Thread Starter
I am overclocking my Athlon 2 X4 630 by bumping the ref clock to 230 MHz. I have decreased the nb and ht multipliers to 9. My memory multiplier is at 2:1 for a whopping 460 Mhz. My memory is value line Corsair 1333Mhz.
I have tried increasing the memory multiplier to 8:3, but the computer does not even boot. I have manually set the timings fairly loose (e.g. 9-9-9-24) but the computer still does not boot. I have an Asus M4A785T-M motherboard.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well don't forget on your CPU you can decrease the CPU multiplier. I assume you're trying for around 3.2ghz? Set FSB to 250, CPU multiplier to 13 would get you 3.25ghz, and you could set your memory multiplier so it's at 1332.5mhz.

Dopamin3, thanks for you suggestion. I had difficulty getting my reference clock above 240. I lowered the multipliers on CPU, NB, RAM, HT, but the computer hung when I set the ref clock to 251 with AMD overdrive. I will give it another attempt with the bios directly.

Generally, I am wondering why I cannot raise the RAM multiplier from 2:1 to 8:3 with the ref clock at 230 MHz. My understanding is that if I loosen up the RAM timings and am not exceeding the RAM specs It should work. Am I understanding things correctly?

Thanks again.

I tried the following:

ref clock: 250 MHz
cpu mult: x11 (for margin)
nb mult: x8
ht mult: x8
ram mult: 8:3 timings 9-9-9-24

The computer powered up, but I didn't get the BIOS splash screen. On reboot, the bios message was that my overclock failed. What am I missing?

Thanks.

Generic RAM holds you back...
It should be well expected

Try increasing the CPU-NB voltage or updating the BIOS, might just be a RAM multiplier it doesn't like

BIOS!

Thanks for your suggestion concerning the BIOS, xd_1771. I updated the BIOS and the MOBO allows me to turn up my reference clock to 250. With the prior BIOS, 250 MHz hung the system or didn't get to POST.

I followed Dopamin3's suggestion to use 250 ref clock and 8:3 multiplier for my RAM. My system was stable with a CPU multiplier of 13.5 (14 BSODed under stress). My memory uses 8:3 multiplier which brings it back to default settings. HT and NB are set to x8, which brings me back to stock speeds.

I am very happy with my Athlon 2 X4 630 running at 3375 Mhz. This is my first build (a year old) and first OC.

Thanks for the help.
