Traches is right.

There's almost never a need to disable the Paging File. I used to think there was, but I learned that it's especially a useless (and bad) tweak in Windows 7.

I agree. Disabling pagefile caused my system to hang during startup and shutdown.

Codec is short for compressor-decompressor a piece of software that is able to decode and encode a certain format. All applications that uses media use them one way or another. Unless you got about 10-20 tb of space to store uncompressed formats.

Op to answer you question this is what's happening. Nothing wrong with the pagefile but the problem is the pagefile is always locked so nothing is going to clean it up. Its going to get bigger and bigger and bigger. Then superfetch and prefectch needs to be disabled. so to solve all three problems I just mentioned do the following.

> start
> type regedit in the start search box
> regedit.exe will pop up in the search box hit it to open it.

1 Superfetch...you need to disable this, navigate to:
Hkey_local_machine\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet \\Control\\Session Manager\\Memory Management\\PrefetchParameters...rightclick EnableSuperfetch...hit modify and change 3to 0 and hit OK
2 Prefetch...you need to disable this, navigate to:
Hkey_local_machine\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet \\Control\\Session Manager\\Memory Management\\PrefetchParameters...right click Enableprefetcher...hit modify and change 3 to 0 and hit OK
Moving on some tweaks that generally speed things up...and they are real close to where you are already in regedit
Go back 1 folder to memory management
enable ->clearPageFilesAtShutdown.
enable LargeSystemCache
set SecondLevelDataCache to the size of the Level2 cache on your CPU. You edit this in decimal mode...if you have 4096KB level 2 cache on the CPU just set 4096 in decimal and hit OK.

Wouldn't having the Paging File be cleared at every shutdown perform unnecessary writes to the drive each time Windows 7 is shut down and then started? So I mean wouldn't it perform an unnecessary write when it's cleared and then another one when a new one is created? I've had my Paging File enabled for at least a year now; so what differences should I expect by having it cleared at every shutdown?

Also, how is LargeSystemCache enabled? Should the value be changed to 1? You didn't specify how to enable it.

Finally: what should the expected result be of setting SecondLevelDataCache to the size of your CPU's L2 cache?

alt tabing with pagefile disabled is instant, and many more examples

the thing is that windows uses the pagefile even if you have 80% free ram

i havent used pagefile since xp sp2, vista, win7, never had a problem, but there are some dumb crap games that need pagefile on (guitar hero3, sw force unleashed 2, fuel, and some other crap)

I do not see a difference in Alt+Tabbing with or without the Paging File.

What are some other examples?

Exactly my point, which is actually why the Paging File should not be disabled unless you have an extremely specific reason.

Here's another good reason to leave the Paging File enabled.

Windows 7 takes advantage of the Paging File when it's more efficient to do so.

sorry but i can´t find the good thing about pagefile??

as i said running without pagefile since xp, and i only create one pagefile of 50mb for dumb games like the ones i said before, once i finish the game, pagefile off

those 2-3-4gb could be used for another things

microsoft just use pagefile as default for noob with tiny ram and noobs in general in case someone needs more ram than physical

Oh well sorry that im a newb and did not force asus to make a 10" netbook that can handle 4 gigs of ram
im a newb because i did not call intel and tell them that the atom processor needs to support more ram
Im sorry master that noobs ask questions and get better answers from people who actually are willing to help instead of NOOOBS named sixor who just want to complain that because he doesnt use it, doesnt mean everybody else has to follow his apparent master knowledge......
