spare q9300 worthy for 24/7

I just started folding & hook!!

A while back we cleared some space in the cabinets at work, boss gave me I an old spare mobo that had a q9300 chip. The motherboard is an older supermicro that doesn't allow for OC'in not sure if there is a BIOS change that will allow for it or if I can use some program to OC in windows. Has 2gig DDR and 80GB 2.5" drive.

I have it cased in a silverstone SG02 now, left over from the mITX mobo that died on me last week....that was a tight fit and using a cool jag lo profile falcon heatsink. Figure since its gonna be on 24/7 a better cooler then a brick heatsink would be good.

Would it be worth the PPD to leave on 24/7? Are the newer A3 packets more efficient w/ this old chip? Would it be better to run in Win7 (just finished installing it) or Ubuntu? Not sure if the older Gen1 PCIe can accept a GTS450 if I choice to dump a bill into it.

thanks

Any CPU is handy for FAH. I say 15-20k w. big adv from it but IDK. I don't fold on CPUs.

thanks for the link. I have the SMP4 on normal packets now. Um process manager says FahCore_a3, somehow the priority is set to "low"

eew its tpf = 8:13 for project 6067. I'll try to switch it to larger packets on the next run

You should set it to Normal or High
Remember that doing things on your computer while folding will cause the TPF to increase. Pretty much doing anything will take cycles away from folding, so the more you do the bigger the increase in TPF

Also, you should apply for the F@H postbit once you meet the requirements Happy folding!

You're probably going to average around 4k PPD give or take. No bigadv for you unfortunately. Have you folded 10 SMP units yet? You won't get any bonuses (and thus the optimal PPD) until you do.

i don't have 10 SMPs yet, still working on that.I have 14WUs done but figure half is from the GPU. This rig is SLOW. TFP went down to 13min eww but its chuggling alone. It was at 18min when I woke up but changed some cpu proirities around. Wonder if it would be more optimal in Ubuntu?

As long as the slot is x16 length, it will handle any GPU. and since folding doesnt require hardly any PCIe bandwidth, the fact that is is gen1 is fine. (i believe it has been proven that even at x1 bandwidth, the impact on folding performance in negligible.)
