The inside of my next case mod (feedback appreciated)

Thread Starter
I may wait for Bulldozer, but if I sell some PC parts in the next week or so I'll need to pull the trigger quick to fill the computing void, so I thought I would work up another build (with all of your help of course). I want this to be a good all-a-rounder that can take anything I throw at it (amateur video, modeling, games, high-quality audio, etc.).

So here is what I'm thinking:

CPU: i7 2600k (I live near a Microcenter, so this seems like a good option).

MB: Asus P8P67 Deluxe Rev. 3. Is it worth getting the WS Revolution or is that only worth it for 2 graphics cards? Quality that will last longer is important to me.

RAM: Not sure. I need something good for overclocking, and I'd probably like about 8GB.

Video: Palit GTX 580 3GB - I use two monitors both at pretty high resolution, so I thought the 3GB of Vram are probably a good idea. I also want this system to last a while, and Vram seems like a good way to future proof.

PSU: Either 850 or 750 Corsair/Seasonic AX series or Seasonic equivalent (this really depends on Newegg deals). Serious power efficiency is important for me and also low-volume.

Storage: I'm still working this out, but I think that I'm going to be using 2 1TB F3s for movies/music/games/large files and 1 2TB F4 for backup. I'll also have an OS drive, which may or may not be an SSD (I'll see how much the case parts cost me).

Audio: Essence STX sound card. I use my headphones almost all of the time so this is the obvious choice.

Optical: Pioneer BDR-206MBK. I may also include another DVD drive, but I'd have to think about that. Is the Pioneer alright for noise? Noise is a serious concern. The computer will need to be able to play/burn blueray/dvd movies and also rip audio, is the pioneer a good choice?

Thanks!
Rick

If anyone's wondering, the case will most likely be made out of MDF and veneered. Cooling is either going to be liquid or something custom.

Looks good!

Any particular budget/don't care how much you spend? Or cheaper system that will still last? (eg. Can shave off $100 or so by getting an i5 2500? Since it seems like you're goingn to Bulldozer or so?)

Not looking for more than one graphics? (for future additions, or are you going to sell the single and buy another single?)

I can't go crazy, but I have a loose budget. I'm willing to spend extra if it means that I don't have to replace the system in the near future. I wouldn't go to Bulldozer if I built this, I just think that I may need a computer before June. The $100 doesn't matter so much as getting a better processor (I'm willing to spend more for main components).

As far as graphics, I'm still wearying about handling the heat therefore noise generated by CF/SLi and I'm also not ecstatic about micro-stuttering problems that I've heard about. I also may watercool the GPU, so a single GPU makes that a much cheaper proposition.

My main questions are about the WS Revolution and about choosing RAM, and to a lesser extent about alternative storage options.

Even the deluxe will be overkill for your use I'm pretty sure. What features do you need on it over the pro? I'd go with the P8P67 Pro. For the RAM 8GB of G.Skill Ripjaw X should do you well. Also, if you get an SSD, depending on your budget the Vertex 3 is very very fast.

It may very well be overkill. I picked it because I used to own a much older deluxe board years ago, and because I like having two LAN ports. The WS Revolution I was considering for better build quality and to potentially add another GPU if I need more power in years to come.

Thanks for the tip on the RAM, any reason you'd pick this set?

And, I was looking at the Vertex series. The Vertex 3 still seems a little expensive to me, I was thinking I might be able to justify a vertex 2, but I'm not really a big fan of paying out the for storage space.

I'll have to think about the Pro, and maybe the price difference will tilt me in the direction of an SSD.

The black RAM is slightly faster but you won't notice the difference unless you're benching. You'd probably be able to overclock (tighten the timings) on the blue RAM to be equal or better than the black set anyway.

In terms of storage, grab a couple or more 1TB or 2TB drives and throw them into RAID 1 for more speed and redundancy =D

SDD for OS would be sweet! (it'll be a LOT faster).

Sorry don't know much about the motherboard
