Does 2x 650W PSU = 1300W PSU? :p

Thread Starter

Just wondering if I purchase another 650W PSU such as the one in my sig rig, would it be possible to use both PSU's to power a mid-range Quad SLI setup? Or will I need to go with one PSU and one PSU only for that?

And if you aren't allowed to use multiple PSUs to power one motherboard, how does he do it here? Would the second PSU be hooked up directly to the third and fourth GPUs?

I saw a thread on this a LOONG time ago, basically you can do it but you have to rig up a button to turn on the psu (its normally done thru the mobo. I'll do some google fu and come back if I can find a thread on this

It's possible and not hard to implement, just not recommended or practical.

Yes this can be done easiily.... All you need is one of these:

http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=21193

plug the 24 pin of the second PSU into the one with only a green wire and it will come on when the Pc is turned on. However what will be tricky is getting the power distribution right e.g. maybe 3 GPUs on the secondary PSU and 1 GPU, CPU and everything else of the main PSU.

Where would you fit it? You'd have to get a case that can fit 2 psu's.

did it with a dell optiplex coz it had only 2 connectors for the hdd. green black paperclip tape and powered the othe other hdds with it.
But no way in hell will I do it on my gpu setup. Hdd can take a dump and cost about 4 to 5 times less. if you have one quality 650w psu it would have enough for two cards
