New to watercooling

Hey guys,

Im new to watercooling and would like a hand picking out parts to upgrade my computer.

I currently have:
Case NZXT Phantom
motherboard: P6T
CPU: I7 920 @3.8
Ram: 6 GB x Gskill Trident DDR3-2000 (soon to be 12)
Currently have 2x 5870 stock speeds and cooling (not oc because it seems to run very hot)

I am thinking about upgrading to a 6990 but from all the reviews i have read its hell loud and hell hot on stock cooling and clock so i want to know what parts i would need to buy to make a wartercooling loop to include the cpu and 6990. i will not be running xfire with another 6990 at any stage.

could any kind peeps out there give me a hand on selecting parts for the loop and also any suggestions on other upgrades you think i may need to stop it bottlenecking.

Cheers

Sydney- Australia, price is irrelevant- if im to be getting a 6990 i want it as cool as i can get it. - i use my pc for FPS games and also 3D work with Maya/Max and rendering.

i figured the water block for the card will be about $160 or so but im not too sure about the pumps n res.

How important is sound; is silence required or some noise ok?

If money isn't much of an issue you can use the following as a sort of guide or template:

Pump: DDC 3.25 $110 AUS

Pump Top: EK DDC X-Top Rev2 $26 AUS

Radiator: XSPC RX360 (might have to mod your phantom) $115 AUS

Reservoir: (doesn't really seem to matter, get one you like) XSPC Passive Aluminum Res (Silver) On Sale $37 AUS *EDIT* DO NOT USE ALUMINUM WITH COPPER BLOCKS!

GPU Block for 6990: EK-FC6990 Nickel Acetal $172 AUS

CPU Block: EK Supreme HF Acetal $82 AUS

Figure another $20-30 for tubing and $15-60 on fittings, depending on if you just do barbs or go compression.

Distilled water is fine for coolant and add a silver kill coil or biocide to prevent algae growth etc.

Don't get dyes, just get color or UV reactive tubing if that's the look you're going for.

I'd consider that RX360 the minimum for cooling down your i7 and 6990. If you want to OC, optimally you'd want another rad, like a thick 240 in there as well. You may have to mod your phantom, or if you prefer not to, you should be able stick the 240 rad up top and the 360 off the back.

*edit* I just realized that thick rads may not work up top in the phantom, not enough clearance from the mobo when the fans are attached. Not really sure how you'd go about this; perhaps mod out some of the HDD cages and put the 240 on the bottom: http://image.svijethardvera.com/images/foto0009pgp.jpg

Gentle Typhoon AP-15's (1850rpm) are the go to fan for water cooling blending performance with low noise. Anything with good CFM and high static pressure should do the trick.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, Im not afraid to mod the case as iv already added a case window. If I got rid of some old hdd and upgraded to larger capacity but fewer hds I could manage to fit it down the bottom.

Are there any other rads that anybody can suggest that would fit better?

If you are planning on cooling your CPU and GPU(s) (The 6990 counts as 2 as well as your current crossfire), I wouldn't recommend a radiator less than a 360, and a thick one at that.... Most people in that situation will go with either a 360, 2 240s, or a 360 and a 120. I don't think you'll get a much better fit. You could get an external mount adapter for the radiators and mount them externally, negating any problems with room in the case, and potentially giving you cooler temps.

Cheers for the info, i have ordered the waterblocks and am just tlking to others on the NZXT forums about modding the case to fit the 360 up top as id prefer to have everything inside the case but if its unavoidable hanging it off the back would be ok.

you think i need a 120 or 240 in the loop as well? if i can mount the 360 on top successfully i could throw the 120 down the bottom or inside the drive bays.

In regards to the res - does it have to be a certain size to fill the loop? or will any really do?

And what size tubing do you guys recommend?
i was looking at
http://www.gammods.com.au/store/inde...oducts_id=2009

Id prefer to keep it as quiet as possible but im not pedantic about it.

Also with the fittings what exactly do i require to complete the loop? im not sure about all that - total noob at this

You want at least 7/16" ID or ideally 1/2" ID tubing. If you use the 1/2" ID tubing on 1/2" barbs, you will want to clamp the tubes to the barb (steel spring or worm clamp).

5/8" ID is a bit too restrictive for a loop that size.

Some say that a res isn't even necessary, but those people are usually seasoned WC'ers that know what they're doing. A 150mm res and up should do the trick as you're only running a single pump loop. I just realized I made dumb mistake recommending an aluminum passive reservoir when you have a copper block loop. Aluminum and Copper do not get along.... You're better off with an acrylic res. XSPC make a few "Bay Res" types that go in a 5.25 bay so you can see your water level from the front of your PC.

A 360 plus a 120 in the bottom or front should be fine for dissipating the i7 and 6990 wattage. Again, I'm not sure if you'll be able to fit a thick rad plus fans up top. Thin radiators require very high CFM/Static Pressure fans in order to cool down your water due to the dense fin placement. Therefore you gain quite a bit of noise.

yeah i have checked with the guys over on the nzxt forums. they all say thick rads dont fit so they recommend XSPC RS360 Radiator It fits with a modded holding bracket and some slim fans.

i canceled my order on the blocks i previously ordered so i can sort out parts properly and make sure everything is compatible.

so how does this sound?

XSPC RS360 Radiator top mounted (requires modding) $79

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=16710

XSPC RX240 Radiator bottom mounted (requires modding) -$89

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=13082

EK-FC6990 Acetal + Nickel -$175

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=17133

EK-Supreme HF Acetal Nickel- $85
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=13266

Laing DDC 3.25 12V 18W Version -$99
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=15747

EK-DDC X-Top G1/4 Rev.2 -$26.15
http://www.gammods.com.au/store/inde...roducts_id=678

BO: EK-BAY Spin Reservoir - Acetal -$78.35
http://www.gammods.com.au/store/inde...oducts_id=1353

PrimoFlex PRO LRT Tubing (UV Red 1/2") per metre- $9.25 /mtr
http://www.gammods.com.au/store/inde...oducts_id=2003

BO: EK-PSC Fitting 10mm - G1/4 - 3/8" (1/2" OD) - Nickel -$4.75 e
http://www.gammods.com.au/store/inde...oducts_id=2808

Roughly $700 for a complete setup

Do you think i could get away with just the 1 slim 360 rad?

Thanks for ur input mate

That sounds like it would work, but I question the ability of thin fans to have enough Static Pressure to get air through that RS360...
