Budget Gaming Rig

Thread Starter
I want to build a new gaming rig. With SWTOR/Tera coming out this year I'm in dire need of a new setup. I currently use a crappy laptop that I've had for 5 years(it can only run wow on very low settings). I would like to keep it in the 500-700ish range and be able run most if not all games on High to max settings. My biggest question is the 2500k SB worth the extra money over the x4 955be if your on a strict budget. As far as GPUs go I was thinking a GTX 460 or 5750.

thx for the help

Cpu- 1090t= $200
Mobo- ASUS M4A785-M $70
ram- G.SKILL 4GB ddr2 $65
Hdd- seagate barracuda 7200rpm 1.5tb $70
cd/dvd- LG Black 24X Cd/Dvd burner $20
Ps- you pick your own
Case- take your pick.
gpu- VisonTeK radeon 5670 $115
minus your ps and case that brings it to $540

take other peoples suggestions too. this is my build and its plenty fast for me but sometimes i feel like my cpu is twidling its thumbs waiting for the Hdd to catch up (i need to upgrade to ssd)

Or you should look for a board with ddr3 support but having the 6 core is going to show huge performance gains whenever games and apps that utilize more cores come out.

why would you get a 1090t for a gaming rig? games are only starting to use 4 core now.

and a 5670 is not powerful enough

Yeah... go with ddr3 as well, ddr2 is obsolete. Am3/+ is now.

At work, if a good build hasn't been brought up I'll pull one off the egg for you when I get back.

Im saying for the future, and the 5670 plays blackops at max settings without a hiccup.

2500k is the best bang for buck right now if you game alot. Mobo biostar TP67B+. 4GB of DDR3. HD 6950. Everything should be around $750 and you will be set for any games at 1080p

Core i5 2500K is worth it, but it'd mean you'd have to put your budget up quite a bit higher if you want comparable GPUs.

For $700, you can get:

Samsung SH-S223C DVD+RW Drive: $20

LIAN Li Lancool PC-K58W Case: $70

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO Motherboard: $109

HS Radeon HD 6870: $200

Antec TruePower New 650W: $80

Team Xtreem Dark 4GB DDR3 1600MHz: $48

AMD Phenom II X4 925: $115

Cooler Master Hyper 212+ Cooler: $35

Subtotal: $678
Total: $690

If you have good experience mounting air coolers and can take the extra complexity + size but want even better cooling, get the Scythe Mugen 2.

Why would you get a 5670 when 5770 is only slightly more expensive...

To be honest, anything underneath 5770/460 is going to be pretty bad and since 5770 is not expensive, save for it if you can.
