Budget Gaming Rig - Page 2

IMO SB would be a good bang for the buck build, but if you really don't have the money, go with a ii x 4 955 or 965. I build my bro's ii x 4 965 for $600 w/ 5850. With so many cards in the 150-200ish range, its a waste to get anything below a 5850 or gtx 460.

thx alot for all the help everyone. One last question as far as life span goes (I know 2500k is newer) if I get the x4 955 would I be looking for an upgrade, down the road in the next couple of years? Versus getting the 2500k

For gaming, not really. If you OC the NB to 2.8GHz on a Phenom II it comes pretty close to matching a 2500K.

This is probably as close as it gets to ideal in terms of performance-price and expandability, there are only a few things worth complaining about:
1. Don't buy Hyper 212+ on Newegg. Never do that. They rip you off every single time you even consider purchasing it. The Scythe Mugen 2 would be a better choice for the same price (as suggested). Or you can get 212+ for significantly cheaper at [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002G1YPH0"]Amazon[/ame] ($27 shipped new) or [ame="http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=RR-B10-212P-G1-R&AID=10440852&CJPID=3629892"]Geeks.com[/ame] ($15 + shipping refurbished)
2. I'm not a fan of $27 shipped overpriced DVD drives. Get this [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QGDWLK/"]$23 shipped[/ame] one off Amazon.

Yeah, didn't notice the overpriced shipping. Still, if you want free shipping, you can get a Sony Optiarc DVD+RW Drive with LightScribe for $23 shipped, too. It's more reliable than the Samsung or Lite-On thanks in part to its NEC chipset and also reads/writes faster. As for the Cooler, I agree. Get it at Amazon.

Yeah, there's also a $21 shipped LG DVD drive that was found lately by another member (I posted it).

Also, if you don't mind me adding again, this is a great deal on RAM!

The Hyper 212+ thing, it's been like that on Newegg for awhile, I'm surprised they're still getting sales/recommendations honestly for that

To be honest, anything underneath 5770/460 is going to be pretty bad and since 5770 is not expensive, save for it if you can.

I have a 450 GTS and it can run most games at 1920x1080 just fine without overclocking the CPU or the GPU. I mean for light and optimized fps and other games I'd count a 450 GTS and its AMD Radeon equivalent too. it consumes less energy too

The i5 2500k is miles better than any AMD x4, not to say that the latter is a bad processor, but it is rather old and approaching the end of its lifecycle. Also important to note, the i5 2500k has the best price/performance than any mid-high end processor.

As for the GPU, the 5850 is nearly as good as the 6870, and $65 cheaper, making it easily one of the best GPU deals on the market.

CPU: Intel i5 2500k: $225
Motherboard: MSI P67A-G43: $115 after rebate
RAM: Patriot Gamer 2 - PGD34G1600ELK: $52
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 5850: $145
DVD Drive: Samsung SH-S223C DVD+RW Drive: $20
Case: APEX TX-381-C Black Steel Micro ATX Tower: $30
PSU: Antec TruePower New TP-650 650W: $80
Cooler: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002G1YPH0/"]Cooler Master Hyper 212+ Cooler[/ame]: $27

Total: $695 after rebate ($705 before)

Also; you can get the HAF 912 for $20 more.

This is truly the best bang for your buck. The motherboard allows for another 5850 to be added later on as well.

Great deal on the RAM. OP, if you have the money now, jump on this. As for the Hyper 212+, I won't be recommending it from Newegg again unless they drop the price to at least $30. At the price it's at there the Scythe Mugen 2 is a better option.
