So now ive got no idea where to look.

Basically, when I play mafia 2, one strange thing will occur.

First, my CPU is overclocked to 3.8ghz, GPU to 910 on core, 880 being stock for TF2

Now when a GPU overclock is unstable, the drivers will crash. But this is different. Mafia 2 is a GPU heavy game btw. Ok, so the crash looks like this. The game would suddenly freeze and ive got to alt tab out of it through device manager. at the toolbar at the bottom, there's strange colours and firefox icon or so go purple etc, and the error message Mafia 2 has stopped working gave some artifacting looks aswell, it's hard to explain.

Since a GPU overclock failing would give a driver crash message, where do I start to see what is causing this ?

Check your temps. Whats your cooling solution? If it's artifacting its usually that your GPU is overheating.

Overclocking can result in many things, including crashing drivers and artifacts. You have both.

That sounds to me like something is overheating. CPU/North Bridge/ GPU.

The other possible issue is your power supply. Normally a 550w would be fine for your system, but coolermaster isn't exactly the most reliable company for electronic components.

It can be the overclock, but I doubt it with such a minor change. Drop it back to stock and see if it happens, then start looking elsewhere.

CPU wont go above 49C, GPU isnt overheating 71C, dont know about northbridge. Case has good airflow.

I've reduced the clock on the CPU to 3.7ghz and I don't experience it anymore. Maybe that was it ? on 3dmark11 and Heaven 2.5 the GPU clock is stable.

Some procs are touchy about their oc's. It could be your voltage. Some CPU's need different voltages to run similar oc's. Either way, I don't think 3.7 is too much of a downgrade for stability.

Yah, a bad OC can cause anything from driver crash to full-on freezes.

Is everything set to defaults in NVCP?

Yep, but as stated, ive reduced the core on the GPU to 910 from 916 and from CPU from 3.8 to 3.7, even though not big downgrades, It's not happening anymore.

Just wondering what it was though. I doubt it was the GPU since 6mhz difference is not visible. Hmm.
