RAID 0 and # of Drives

Thread Starter
I currently have three 80GB 1.5GB/s SATA drives in RAID0. Nothing important is stored on this computer (I have a server with RAID1 for that) and I just recently got a hold of another 80GB 1.5GB/s SATA drive for free that I would like to add.

I'm going to add it either way for the extra disk space, but I was curious if the performance benefit from RAID0 was linear on the number of drives.

To me, it would seem like that would be the case, since you'd have 4 lanes of 1.5GB/s and 4 drives all seeking at the same time, but I was curious if this logic is actually correct.

Anyone have any idea?

Yes, the gain is pretty linear.
Performance goes up, but it's not linear.

Proof is in this thread: http://www.overclock.net/hard-drives-storage/324322-2-drive-raid-0-vs-3-a.html

It is fairly linear, not totally, you might get a little less than double the speed, but it will be fairly close - after 2 or 3 it goes slightly down hill from there.

With each drive added there is a performance gain, but with each drive added the performance gain decreases.

Awesome thanks a lot guys. The graphs in that other thread were nice to see as well. I think this will be the last addition to my cheapo RAID0 set-up.
