can I run Software raid on hardware controller

Thread Starter
I'm looking at the Lian li Ex-50b esata raid enclosure.

It supports 5 harddrives and different raid.

Ive read on the internet and when running linux and mdam and the HW raid is ignored so you can create software raid from mdam.

Now I'm considering to make a software raid from windows 7 but not sure if it is even possible?

My understandin for software Raid 5 is the possibility to expand it and it also seems more flexibel.

With HW Raid 5 you need to have 5 harddrives as you can not expand later on from 3-4hdd to 5hdd.

RAID-5, regardless of implementation, requires only 3xHDDs, not 5.

Online Capacity Expansion (OCE) is a controller-specific feature.

You should not run Windows software RAID unless you have absolutely no other option. You should go hardware or firmware RAID if you can...
