C5 error/warning with 2TB Green drive - Page 2

Jumping in on this thread...

My 1TB green drive has been acting up, getting C5 SMART warnings as well. My "data" number is quite higher than yours though, at 136.

WD sends you a hard drive before you send in your old hard drive, and they do it for free.

I see no reason not to RMA. I have 21x WD20EARS and whenever one has a SMART error I just RMA. 0 downtime with WD RMA...

I've only had to do this twice, though. Pretty rare for these drives to fail.. if they are going to fail they tend to do it within the first 200hrs.

Welcome to the party. You could try writing zeroes like I did, seemed to have fixed the warning, at least. Never noticed any problems with my warnings, either. Though it may have been difficult because all that lived on the drive were movies that were played occasionally.

I've got no problem with RMA'ing, but I'd like to avoid it if not necessary. From where I stand now it appears not necessary, as the warnings are gone. I've had a good experience with WD and their RMA process, as well, so I'm not worried about that. Just trying to avoid complications for both sides.

Maybe not, but keep a close eye on it just the same. If it happens again, save yourself the trouble and RMA.

That amount of bad sectors isn't something to be that worried about if the drive has been used for a while. If the drive is fairly new or if you notice that value increasing (especially at a high rate) I would work on replacing that drive. It's inevitable that a drive will accumulate bad sectors over time but if that happens at a high rate it's a sign there's something wrong.
