Temperature Question

Thread Starter
OK, so I have been out of the overclocking game for about 10 years. I just built a machine with the following specs:

- Intel Core i7 2600K
- COOLER MASTER Hyper N 520 RR-920-N520-GP 92mm Sleeve CPU Cooler
- Arctic Silver 5
- ASRock P67 Extreme4
- G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
- COOLER MASTER HAF 912
- EVGA SuperClocked 01G-P3-1563-AR GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB
- Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC128MAG-1G1 2.5" 128GB SATA III SSD
- CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-750HX 750W PSU
- 2x Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s
- Windows 7 Professional

I plan on overclocking it but, before doing so, I wanted to see what my temps were at prior to overclocking. Ambient temperature in the room is about 22C. Idle my CPU is sitting around 29C. I ran Prime95 for about an hour and my CPU peaked at around 57C (the range for the four cores was between 54C and 57C). Are those load temps too high or is that about right? I don't want to start overclocking if I possibly have a non-overclocked temperature issue.

Thanks for any help,
Jared

The temps are about right. The shutoff for sandybridge is 98C with throttling beginning at 92-95C. Most people will advise staying below 85C though for 24/7 usage.

also remember p95 is a stress test and does not replicate real world senarios really. If your going to be gaming and such, your temps will never come close to max temps in p95 during full load. Your temps look about right. I would say you should be able to get to ~4.5GHz no problem while keeping your max temps below 80 in p95. That means real world your temps will probably be in the low 60's while gaming etc.

Good luck!

Thanks for the quick replies. I'll start the overclocking adventure tonight and see what I can get up to.
