[2500k] 3 Months @ 1.45v, no signs of degradation (12 hour blend)

Did a 12 hour blend today to catch any early signs of degradation - there are none. I've had it at 1.45v from Januray 30th.

I have not used Speedstep, it's been locked at 5ghz with rare exceptions where I tested speedstep's performance hit on GPU performance which although minuscule, is there at least for my chip. Temps recorded after 2 weeks of daily gaming use maxed out at 55c on the hottest core.

Looks good so far!

I'm sure you shouldn't see early signs of degradation unless you run your chip on load at extreme temperatures/voltages 24/7...then you'd just be killing your chip. Wait for a year or so to test again...which is what I'm doing as I want to test for myself on when degradation sets in.

Nice job scorpion. Your CPU seems to handle volts well.

Remember that every CPU is different, though. One of the world record holders for the 2500k (he was posted on GB's site) had his golden CPU degrade 0.04v in the first hour, (did 5 ghz 1.29v bootable originally, then a few minutes later needed 1.31v, then even that didnt work, but settled out to 5 ghz at 1.35v stable). He told me both of his 2500k's needed 0.05-0.07v more volts before they stabilized.

What is the lowest vcore you can use at 5 ghz, though? To catch degradation, you have to know the lowest stable limit for 5 ghz. Looks like 1.440v was the lowest the core went at load. What happens if the vcore were 1.430? Would that crash the system?

Also what was the low vcore limit when you first built the computer?

One way to catch degradation is not to run at extremes on the HIGH end, but to run at extremes on the LOW end (the opposite way), like, trying to find the absolute lowest voltage you need for 4.5 ghz or for 5 ghz, and then seeing if they hold up.

My goal for stability is mainly gaming.

1.45v has never BSOD'd during gaming. 1.44v passes 8 hour blend but BSOD's during gaming ~ once every 1.5 weeks. 1.43v passes 12 hour blend however BSOD's during gaming somewhat frequently. Stock VID was 1.190v.

I'm pretty sure I can't run any lower than 1.45v and maintain target stability. HOWEVER when I tried 1.44v I didn't have this custom BIOS that allows me to set CPU PLL all the way down to 1.4v from stock 1.8v. So that's worth looking into. Thanks for your input!

Thanks for the info...I'm actually already in the process of that. My current i7 920 @ 4.4Ghz idles at 1.47v where it hits 1.48v on load. Going even one notch below in the BIOS/eVGA E-Leet would start to cause instability/glitches on my system. I'm pretty much experimenting how long this will last...so far I've had this since September of 2010.

That's good to hear and thanks for reporting back!

Thankfully i have read about to many (only 2) 2500/2600Ks that have bit the dust due to long term overvoltage. So it seems these chips can handle more than everyone thought they could when they were released.

Either way it's early days, but it's good to see things are working well for you!

It's definitely hard to say for sure.
I mentioned in a previous link that one 24/7 folder had his 1.52v 24/7 5 ghz folding rig degrade after 2 months, to where it wouldn't pass 4.6 ghz stable.
And as I said, my first 2600k degraded, like C_N's CPU on XS, by about 0.05v.

However, another person on XS who had a cpu start BSODing, when it was previously stable, took a DMM to the board, and found that the WATTS at load was dropping, and when the watts went below a certain number, it started crashing. And it previously did not drop like that. PSU was fine. +12v line was fine. vcore was not drooping. And since watts=V*A, that means the amps dropped. I don't think he found out what was causing the amps to drop, but may have been the board (he wasn't using a high end board).

My 2500k has needed an extra 0.05vin around a month from new to keep stable @ 4.8ghz so far it is holding ok with folding 24/7 aswell.

I hope it does not need any more voltage in the future and it's just a case of the cpu settling in

If it does degrade however, which is definitely not out of the question, I would happily settle for 4.7ghz 1.3v (currently needs 1.275v for 4.7ghz). It's not till a bunch of people degrade their chips can we find the sweet spot before which they can't take more volts for extended periods of time without degrading. That's one of the reasons I choose to run a relatively high 24/7 voltage, to contribute to the community and if $%# happens I'll say hey guys don't go past so and so voltage. Sure it varies from chip to chip, but someone who reads these forums often will be able to tell you 1.6v will degrade your chip pretty fast if ran 24/7 which we all know due to member trial and error.

Can you do me a favor and look for your default VID that is shown at 3.4 ghz (not 3.3 ghz)? That's the voltage that the BIOS would set as the target voltage, if it were at Auto.
