[H] Console to PC Ports Can Be Great - Page 4

As a person who plays both console and pc games and enjoys them both equally. So long as the game is ported "Right" / runs properly I am all for it. I doubt most of you would spend double to triple the amount of money to develop a game for PC first and then rewrite all the code to make it work on a console.

As a programmer that is just not logical. If it was something for non profit I could understand spending time making it perfect for each platform given the amount of time and effort but at the rate people expect a new game to be released this rarely happens. (atleast in recent years)

Just my 2 cents!

All these 3D Vision, Eyefinity are things to keep PC games alive because there is nothing much else they ca do. Just like they solved the problem with CPUs by adding more cores.

THIS. The mass effect series were ports and they played quite well on the PC. I never played the pc version of fable 2, but I did play the original fable on both PC and xbox and each platform had controls perfectly suited to it. I don't mind ports, just bad ports (i.e. AssCreed 1)

Ports are not inherently bad, but since the majority of them are bad the negative rep has been well deserved.

GTA4 = god awful port - pitifully optimized + looks identical to xbox version
Mass Effect 1/2 = acceptable port - poor textures/lack of AA
BC2 = very good port - proper PC graphics + separate GUI/server browser

If it is anything like 2:20 I am not buying it. That looks like its locked at 30 fps for some reason.

As a console & PC gamer I enjoy them both about the same. Like the user said above I dont mind console ports if they are done right. I dont think PC gamers will ever be happy & there is always going to be a moaning contest because PC gamers will almost always get a port.

Unless the consoles some how die there will always be more ports on true PC exclusives.

I was just going to say that

BFBC2 was done right and if not there's always the settings.ini

It takes effort to do a Port right.. It's not Rocket Science But most of the time Devs shortcut it and just spew out a game when they could've done it better..

With all the PC Moding of GTA4 and GTA:SA will Rockstar listen and make the Game Engine better optimized?

I don't think it was all that good plus it took a few patches just to fix silly things. That game at least had a pc beta which some games neglect in favor of console ones which further enhance the games buggines.

Good thing BC2 sold as well as it did on PC now since BF3 is (hopefully/supposedly) PC first console second. Can't wait to see what a proper PC game will look like.

I don't really get what happened in the programming industry a few years back; I've been REALLY out of the loop. But not too long ago, we had video rendering engines that were entirely cross-platform. (Renderware, for example) This was a glorious advancement in game programming, we could simply code ONE version of the game, and have some small conditional statements for compiling. I.E. have 4 input methods available (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PC), have 3 Model packages available (Xbox360/PS3, Wii, PC) and have the video options only be enabled on the PC version since they would not be applicable to the 360/wii/ps3 versions since that hardware never changes and wouldn't be able to use the advanced options of the engine anyway.
Why not just make the game for... everything? It seems like the best way to maximize profits, especially since it seems like most of the game engines these days are still cross platform; all it would take is compile targets and compiler definitions for the different architectures of the consoles.
