Better online community, better equipment, better visuals and cheaper game prices. I owned three 360s and one PS3, gaming on them became outdated. I started PC gaming only two years ago, been a console gamer for over twenty years so I'm not talking from some PC elitists view. Gaming was average on console and it's average on the PC, seems like gaming today is average in general.

Variety is a great thing.
Many people can't have all three platforms and will defend the platform they own. It's easy to say people shouldn't disagree but there will always be competition, which is good for any industry. Upset PC gamers isn't asking for a special type of game that can't be played on console, we are just asking for a better product. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm not worried though, gaming in general will soon become an afterthought for me.

I game on 3 platforms regularly (PC/360/PS3) and can honestly say that there is things I enjoy and dislike about all of them.

Porting is becoming more and more common and it's not only a matter of console porting to PC... There is issues among porting to the other consoles too. Originally we saw issues with games developed on 360 and ported over to PS3; causing terrible performance and visual quality, lots of technical issues... Now most games are developed on the PS3 and ported over the 360 and now the games perform much more evenly on par.

What I think is happening here, is the developers are working with the platforms that are either the weakest link OR the most difficult to work with... In this case, the most difficult to work with would be PS3. Both PC and 360 use similar coding and utilize Direct X... Sony's console on the other hand does not. What works on one platform doesn't necessarily work on others. So, developers wanting their product to be playable and acceptable on all platforms works on what would be the most challenging first and work their way out to the easiest... Co-development also works nicely where they have separate teams working simultaneously on the getting the game to work on each platform at the same time.

Although, the PC might be the last platform to get worked on by most developers, they probably also put the least time/resources into it. Unfortunately, their money-makers are the consoles and likewise, the publishers of the games probably care most about console as well and want the game to release as early as possible. They could spend the time and improve optimizations for PC, or include higher resolution textures, or make all new menus that work with mouse/keyboard better... or they could just leave it as all 3 platforms run the game just about equivalently and call it a day. ---but PC gamers are not happy with that, cause knowing their system could easily handle much better and they've put so much money and time into their hobby, it frustrates them. They want their PC to dominate and to see what it truly can do... Though that is likely only to happen with developers who are really truly rooted in PC gaming these days, which there is very few of anymore...

but no, thats not a console port at all
Come back when you can express your formulated opinion coherently.

Just kidding, I'll bite anyways. During platform-agnostic development, you're really developing one copy at first which is further modified afterwards for each specific platform. Crytek had to fill that string with something. So did Valve:

Is that any reason to call Portal 2 a console port? No. Because that would be an idiotic thing to say because neither Crysis 2 nor Portal 2 were ported from any platform to work any other. Development was done simultaneously.

Very well put. It does seem that gaming has gotten very average lately. We really can't blame consoles for that. The studios are just afraid of trying new ideas. The cost to make a game today is crippling unless you are a small indie studio. Even then 1 failed game can kill the studio. I too seem to be finding myself less and less excited about gaming. For the past few years there have been few games I have been really excited about. The only 3 big games coming that I am excited about are Diablo 3, Guildwars 2, and Blizzards Project Titan. All ironically are PC exclusive.

I guess the question to the PC gaming community is this: What can developers do to make PC gaming really better?

A better more PC oriented out of game UI? IMO this doesn't really help. You will only be interacting with it for a few minutes at most per gaming session.

Better graphics? Heck most of the gaming PC's on here are maxing out playing "console ports" Could developers spend more time optimizing for the PC? Yes and no. Every different graphics card architecture out there has different quirks. The developer can't realistically optimize games for PC much better then they are now. If anything we need to be yelling at the makers of the games graphic engine.

Better controls? This I agree with. This needs to be worked on more.

Better game play? You can't blame the consoles for this one. The studios found out that COD sells well. Blame the gamers in this world.

RE5 and DMC4 run better and also tends to look better than most PC games even today. They're pretty much total console ports. They look fantastic compared to most crap now-a-days, yet for example: DMC4 runs at an average of 100~FPS in DX10 with moderate hardware, and can reach 400FPS with high end hardware.

Bulletstorm is a recent console port that runs great, and looks beautiful as well.

Console ports can be spectacular.

True, there is nothing wrong with wanting a better product but there is a line to be drawn. PC gamers feel, in general, like they're the end all consumers. They deserve anything and everything they demand. And their demands are everything and anything. It's totally unrealistic and no matter how well developers and/or publishers follow up on them, ie Portal 2, they still piss and moan like crazy animals.
They make a big crying deal over the save menu saying "Please don't turn off your console" yet everything about the game points to the contrary about it being a "lousy" console port. Hell, it isn't even a console port to begin with. Then the stupid DLC store complaints, and how "short" it is. No matter how well the game is, performs, looks, and plays - the PC consumers are NEVER EVER pleased. It's sad, just flat out sad, especially with Portal 2 being a fantastic game.

One example of how Portal 2 is a great game on the PC:
It even addressed THE biggest complaint I have about games these days. If they have prerendered cutscenes, such as endings, WHY THE HELL aren't they high resolution? Mass Effect 2 was littered with prerendered cutscenes and loading screens that were "720p" straight-off-the-360-disc compressed pixely garbage! Portal 2, don't have the resolution of the videos or pictures off hand, has obviously higher resolution and much less compressed garbage. Hell, even the textures in the game itself are way better than anything ME2 had which also were straight-off-the-360-disc too. ME2 was supposed to be a PC game, and people still think it is to this day but yet practically every single asset off the ME2 disc is copy pasta from the 360 game and for the most part looks it too.

Releasing Fable 3 on the same day as the Witcher 2 is a big big mistake. Even if it's a great port, I see the Witcher 2 destroying it in sales, and many people won't have the money for both games. The first witcher got much, much better reviews and attention than fable 1/2/3, mainly because they were overly hyped and many people felt let down (even though they were still great games). However, if the Witcher 2 is anything like the first one, it will destroy Fable 3...

I'm also a HUGE fan of Fable 1/2/3, and it's no question to me that The Witcher 2 will be the first game I play.

INB4 Lionhead Studios claiming PC gaming is dead because they picked the worst possible date to release the game.

Thread title should read "Console to PC Ports can be Acceptable"

I just hope that the graphics shown in that video are from the 360 and the PC version just wasnt available at the time. If not, they were talking out of their rear ends when they said they built it to take full advantage of the most powerful graphics cards. the aliasing was horrendous even at 720p.

I think that rehashing some older popular titles like the original Tomb Raider in higher resolutions with modern textures, models, physics, lighting, etc. would be a profitable undertaking for any modern gaming studio.
