android, as far as i know, does not actually log the info. atelaset, with modifying and creating several android rom over the past few years on a few different devices, i haven't come across any suspect log files that contained any geographic location.

plus, we all know that apple is famous for when they are in a pickle, they make things up about competitors to try to aleviate the negative attention from themselves [see iphone 4 antena issues]. so i wouldn't put it past apple starting blogs and rumor mills that android devices track your position as well.

Does something like 'History Eraser' app clear this cache? I know it clears your standard internet cache, etc.

if you're rooted with a custom recovery, you can use the recovery to wipe cache and dalvik cache.

or, if you're rooted, you can go to /data/data/com.google.android.location/files/
there you will find two cache files, "cache.cell" and "cache.wifi". one is a caching of location via cell signal, the other is via wifi. to view the files, you have to use apktool to decompile/decode the files (data is encrypted). you can make out some numbers and whatnot. here's the info located in my cache.cell (zomg police will arrest me for this!)

from what i can gather by the numbers that you can make out, the 310 and 410 are the mcc and mnc ports for the tower, the 17560 must be some type of id number, whether it's my imei or sim, idk. the 81069936 either has something to do with tower id.

maybe if i'm bored later, i'll decrypt the files and tell everyone exactly how much info is collected on android devices. but from the looks of it, this just looks like the last few hours or so.

My phone is rooted... but it's nice to know Android makes it less easily available than silly iphones. Still something I would prefer to be able to clear easily or not have saved at all.

not to mention these "incidents", equal less than .00001% of the US population. meaning you have more of a chance of winning the lottery then you do having the police wrongly knocking down your door.

again, the government has the ability to track you, with or without agprs. they can collect this info without having to "purchase" it from google or apple (another fact that discredits the entire arguement of the government watching you). this is the side effect you live with when you demand complete and total safety out of the government. it's a matter of national security. the government has no interest, nor cares about what you're downloading on your mobile device.
Taking over for error10.
Ill start with my favorite line:

This might be hard for you to do but please try. Just try to extrapolate a tiny bit, just a teensy tiny bit. If the police can botch house raids (which you sortof have to be an idiot to do) dont you think they can botch which cell phone theyre tracking and apprehend the wrong person.

If you werent an idiot jumping on the gizmodo "its all cool" bandwagon maybe youd actually be using your brain. Its not about what you have or havent done, its about privacy and how your government shouldnt be able to know exactly where you are at any given time. Especially when random people in the "government" can have access to this information.

Just some food for thought (hopefully your peasize brain will gain something from my words of wisdom)

wow. Maybe instead of worrying about looking like the coolest fat kid on the internet by trying to insult me, you would understand some of the points I am making.
1. Whether you have a smartphone or not, the government has the ability to track you and could care less about what you're doing with it.
2. The data collected, isn't much on an android device.
3. Even if you are that less than that .00001% that ends up in a botched up police raid and then be the select fewer due to cellular data collection, then the authorities had better have more substantial evidence to convict you of anything.
4. I guess I'll hop off the gizmodo (a pretty reputable media/info source) and hop aboard the tin foil hat conspiracy nutso bandwagon. Because that would make a ton of sense...

I dont think you saw the white text did you? I was mostly kidding

But i still disagree with you. I know they can track anyone but still, this is sortof ridiculous. I know this isnt going to make sense but:
I dont really care not because i dont care, but because my caring isnt going to change anything.

Nothing we can do is going to change it, so either deal with it and keep your phone or chuck your phone in the garbage.

well, even decompiling cache.cell and cache.wifi doesn't display much. there are maybe 60 entries in my cell file, none of which are even readable. which tells me they are in a language that whatever apps that uses the cache can read. so unless i build an app to read them, then display the info, i can then figure out what info is stored in cache, and how accurate it is.

i can tell though that the cache is limited. meaning once it hits x amount of entries, the first is eliminated when adding another.
