Upgrading from a gtx 295 to a 480 will get you only around 5%-10% fps increase. Personally if I had your system I would get an after market cooler and start overclocking, you would see much for of a performance increase for the cash you spent.

Do you really NEED to upgrade just yet? I mean I'm tempted to as well but then it realize at 1920x1200, i can max out 95% of the games I own and never dip below 60fps.

Sure, i dont get ALL the dx11 features... but what game does that matter in?

And at the end of the day, fermis arnt THAT fast really. Its not so much an upgrade as a side-grade in most situations.

IMO its best just to wait until theres a real reason to upgrade.. that could be anywhere between 6 months and 2 years from now at the rate things are going... I'm sure there will be a better card for your money then than a 480.

Wait for kepler's core/ southern islands. It'll be here within 4-5 months, and believe me it will be well worth the wait. Plus I'm pretty sure your card can still max out any new game in dx10, mine can still hold its weight and its just a little under yours.

thanks for the quick response guys. i know its not that much of an improvement but im wanting to go 2d surround and future proof my system for a while because i dont intend to upgrade again for some time (hard times ahead due to me moving out!) so £79/$130 doesnt seem like a bad price to start me off. im just finding it hard to justify getting another 295 when i could spend a bit more and get the 480's.

Well the problem with that is that 480s really arnt THAT fast. Nothing is future proof... just slower or faster to become obsolete. If a torrent of new games come out that render a 295 obsolete, they will do the same to 480s... unless of course those games are all native dx11 and fully make use of dx11... then maybe the 480 will last another 6 months to a year....

Now... if you saved that $130 until an upgrade was actually significant, you could buy something that would likely run laps around a 480. see what I mean?

Considering the lack of DX11 games out, and considering the GTX 295 can handle ANYTHING out now and until next year. I don't see any rational reason to get a gtx 480.

Very well said.
The 480 would be a sidegrade if you have a 295.
Unless you're going for a 480 sli, then don't bother. The 295 should do everything you want it to, except play crysis at 2560x1600. In most of the benchmarks I've seen, the 480 is barely ahead of the 295, which is most likely either because of the:
-the 480 having roughly 2x the VRAM
-the new fermi architecture
