Questions about hotmail Junk and spam

Thread Starter
Hey guys, so recently i have been noticing that i have been getting more spam in my Hotmail compared to 6 months ago (1 every 2 days now to 6 overnight) I believe it has to do with an old friend that had their account hacked (which her account as well is still sending spam). I know i wont be able to stop it but i was wondering what are some common ways that spammers get your email other then me myself filling out false pages and such?

Also i was wondering is there a way to hide my Junk folder in hotmail? or at least not have the notification that i got new junk email? new emails make the folder folder becomes bold like this " Junk (1)"

Thanks for the help!

In Hotmail it isn't possible to make it to where your junk folder does not show the count, but it is possible to hide the junk folder from showing by default by simply clicking on the "folders" button.

Many mailers, both legal and illegal hit Hotmail. If you haven't subscribed to anything lately, and your friend got hacked, you likely are the victim of the 4th type that I list below. You can generally tell which type of mail you are recieving by right clicking or your messages and looking at the source code. If you are familiar with html what I'm going to describe to you should be fairly easy. Hotmail filters their content based on a number of factors, reputation of ip, domain in addition to other things. They also filter based on the content of the messages. Often more spammy compaines (that aren't whitelisted and are far more likely to be not-legal) use dictionary bombs or huge chunks of words in the source of their email, hidden from plain view in style, title, or other tags (such as <-- -->).

As for your junk email, there are several ways that email companies can get your info, some being more sketchy than others. Generally, there are 4 major ways with varying levels ranging from most legal to definitely illegal as far as the US is concerned:
- double opt in - user opts in to recieving mail & sends confirmation email to user which they must respond to before being added to list (you'll see this with many large companies such as Amazon, Newegg, etc)
- single opt in - opt-in without confirmation email. Many more sketchy companies do this by having small text or on a separate policies page that says that they "or their partners" (who may be marketing companies) may send you emails.
- 3rd party opt in - these are the lists that marketing firms generally buy or take part in a rev share with compainies controlling the data and mail to users, edge of legal.
- stealing/web scraping/dicitonaryguessing/many more - this type is definitely illegal and employed by major spamming giants such as the old Russian botnets and even some in the US and Asia. These types generally use whatever methods possible to get email addresses and send out regardless of opt-in or opt-out.

Hope that helps a little, good luck dealing with your spam problems.

Thanks! this helps alot, just trying to figure out where its coming from. I asked one of my friends deactivate their old email and looks like my junk dropped to 1-2 emails a day, so its an improvement +rep
