Which CPU?

Thread Starter
Alright so I was originally gonna wait till later this year when the new AMD cpu was coming out.....but now I can't wait. I want a new system and now. So I'm running into the problem of what cpu to get. I think I've narrowed it down to one of the AMD phenom II X6's or the Core i5 2500k. but im a big AMD fan. All I want is something fast, something I can overclock and something that doesnt limit my choices of motherboards(cuz i want something that supports SLI NOT Crossfire)

I'm currently running on a AMD Phenom X4 9950 BE OCed to 3.0GHz and it still runs great and all, but i want something new. It's been 2 years, i can use this rig for a LAN if ppl come over, but for me I want something newer and better that will last me some time but be able to perform.

Any suggestions or help as to which route I should go?? AMD or Intel

*As a side note, I do play a ton of computer based games. I dont use a whole lot of software for doing anything crazy like video editing/rendering and what not as far as that goes.

Go with Intel, there're almost no SLi boards with AMD, get a board that supports SLi + CF. So yeah, the 2500K. Or just wait another two months and get Bulldozer.
with the setup you have now, I would go for a 955 and overclock it to something high like 4ghz, if you have the cooling for it.

the 955 will blow that 9950 out of the water. I have two rigs, one with the 9950 at 3.2ghz and my 955 at stock 3.2ghz blows it away, let along at 4ghz.

I would have to fully agree with this.

Another vote for the 2500K if you want something now. OC the 2500K and you'll be set for a while.

I hate to admit, being an AMD supporter, but you guys are right. I've noticed its hard as heck to find an AMD MB supporting SLI now-a-days. As far as the other person mentioned with the 955, i dont have the cooling right now, Im running all air. want to get a water cooling system, but i think thats for another thread....cuz i have no clue what it involves and the h/w i will need to do.

but ok, so I go with the 2500k, then my next question then is what MB should I be looking at? I know this much, I will need a board that can support both the GPUs i will have installed.....I will have tomorrow in the mail 2 ASUS GTX 580s. These are one part in my upgrade process.

So whats a good if not awesome MB (my budget is mid-high range) that works great with a i5 2500k and will offer me the SLI support and space I need?

Check out my Build Log in my sig, and the CPU-Z Validation.
Overclocks to 4.7ghz easily with a decent Air Cooler, even farther with water cooling.

i5 2500K rocks in my opinion

Also, I really like the MoBo I'm using right now. ASUS P8P67-PRO: Good layout, great for people who want to upgrade parts in the future. It has one known bug, when you cold boot, it powers up, powers down, and powers up again. But there's a fix already so no prob anymore (probablly a permanent fix upcoming in a BIOS update!)

You would love the hell outta sandy bridge compared to the 1st gen phenom. SLi boards aplenty and high OCs. If you wait, Bulldozer comes and 990FX motherboards which are rumored to support SLi.

Hmmm....I like that board setup...but dang, the color scheme is awful, but I guess I cant be getting tooo picky lol. And yes, i will definitely be adding stuff in the future I'm sure.

Like you said with air cooling Kaosuonline, I should be ok then, I left 3 of the stock fans in my HAF case, minus the chassis fan....I took that out and put in 2 120mm delta fans running over 105cfm each.....and I have 2 extra I can put in later.

Thanks for help everyone. I believe I know what I need to get.....
Now to just find the topic on OCing the thing, Do's and Dont's lol
