Mafia II Optimization Issues?

Thread Starter
I'm running this game with 580 gtx SLi @ 840 OCed. The chapter where everything is winter and snowing runs silky smooth, however.. afterwards in the summer chapter I get fps dips where it's noticeable (40fps or less). I checked MSI afterburner and saw that it was fluctuating from 50-60-70% GPU usage. Is Mafia II not optimized or is this something wrong on my end??

Im running @ Everything maxed, no vsync, 1920x1080. Thanks

That's pretty normal for Mafia 2 (my 470's would dip into the high 20's at times), and it's mostly caused by the physX.

Firstly it's because there's parts where the physX is quite demanding, but you can't see the portion of the GPU usage that's due to physX on a card that's also rendering, i.e. rendering cards also doing physX never look maxed out in the AB graphs (even if they are).

Also, even though physX only runs on one card, it slows both cards down equally since they end up being synchronized to the same speed (that of the slower card that's doing physX).

Also some of the physX (the cloth) runs on the CPU unless you have a dedicated physX card. This hits the CPU pretty hard and can cause bottlenecking on the cards, also causing lower usage.
