Sound card + headphone suggestions

Thread Starter
So, I'm probably going to be buying a new pair of headphones and a sound card within the next week or two. I'm looking to spend ~$300 for both.

They're going to be used mostly for gaming and music, but I care more about how they sound with music. I've almost got my entire music collection converted over to FLAC

I also listen to mostly Rock/Metal if it makes a difference.

What I was thinking about from my own research was an Asus Xonar Essence STX and HD555s, but I'd like to hear some more imput.

Yep, what I would do is get a really nice sound card and some entry level headphones, and then get some really good headphones when you save up some more money. I love my HD555s right now .

So, are both those Headphones better than the HD555s? And if you could, can you tell me why?

Well honestly, I'd rather pay more and get something I'd enjoying for a long time than waste money on something I plan on upgrading soon. I'd like this setup to last me 3-4yrs preferably.

i'd look at the Grado's for headphones they seem to be better for that kind of music although they probably wont be the greatest for gaming.

So, something like the SR 60i or SR80 would be better for rock music?

All kinds of stuff really...

In most games I play (MMOs and Strategy games) I disable sound and run Vent or music in the background. This year I will be playing Skyrim (epic music score inc!), Battlefield 3, Rage and Duke Nukem off the top of my head.

Edit: BF3 will probably be the only one I play online, but I'm not super competitive.
