AM3 CPU in an AM2 socket?! Yep...

Thread Starter
Trying to wring the last ounce of life out of my old AM2 board. Noticed on ASUS' support page that I could update the bios on my Asus M2A-VM to support a newer AM3 CPU!! I realize that it won't use all the the AM3 options. I'd just like to hear from other folks who have done this. I think upgrading my BIOS is the scariest part. Thinking about getting a Phenom 2 X4 925. Should blow away my old Athlon X2 6000 right?? I also have Windows 7 64 Ultimate and 6gb's 800mhz mem.
(Gonna replace my old 9600GT with a Radeon 5830.) Need feedback please!!!

You can try, it should work but I can't guarantee that there won't be any problems.

BIOS upgrades are easy!
It works, I've done it, with a 255X2 in a Gigabyte Nforce Am2.
But really it may be time for an upgrade at least to AM2+ or make it work for a few months then go AM3 when Bulldozer pushes the prices down.

yep AM3 is backwards compatible with AM2+ as long as the BIOS revision supports it but AM2+ will not fit in AM3 sockets

AM2, not AM2+. And it will work fine with an AM3 CPU as long as you update the bios. That's what I did.

Most of the AM2 boards I've seen can be updated to AM2+ via a bios update, which will then support AM3 CPUs.

It's possible You'll only have Turbo Core enable/disable and turbo core multiplier if you are lucky

Bios updates are easy. Most brands get away with Windows Updaters. Do it with the current cpu then put the new one in. Don't forget to load default/optimized settings after bios update. Don't freak out on a cmos checksum error which will force you to enter bios setup which is normal. Check cpu and ram settings then save and exit.

And 6850 is cooler and more energy efficient than 5830 and a bit faster on games.

I had my phenom ii x3 740BE in a DFI 790FX-M2RS. Just had to flash the bios. easy as pie. At first I thought I bricked the board because on restart it didnt post and I just had a blank screen. Did a hard reset and it was fine.

If you update the bios and the CPU supports faster ram, you might be able to run your ddr2 ram at 1066 or higher if you have high end ram. I was running my Corsair XMS2 DDR800 at 1066 with no issues in prime95.

He's going with a X4 925, so no turbo core

I also upgraded the BIOS to support the X6 on my AM2+ but theres no TurboCore option in the BIOS, so it depends.
