Tubing Size

Thread Starter
So I hear 7/16" ID will fit over 1/2" barbs.

Is this not recommended? I've read for compression fittings, you need 1/2" ID tubing over 1/2" compression fittings.

And what OD size is usually recommended?

Smaller the better to minimize kinking?

that's correct 7/16 will fit 1/2 ID barbs for clean look (no clamps need it) ,for compressions (use same as compressions)
EDIT to minimize kinking ..best bet 1/2 ID 3/4 OD or 1/8 wall thickness

Be sure to heat up the 7/16" ID tubing in boiling hot water so it makes it a lot easier to stretch over the barb. As CHL said, it makes a tight seal with 1/2" barbs with no need for clamps. You can still put them on if you wish to have some extra peace of mind.

And for compression fittings, the ID and OD of the tubing needs to match exactly. These fittings clamp the tubing against the inner barb so an exact fit means a tighter seal. Thicker tubing walls leads to less kinking. Primochill Pro LRT (colored) or Tygon R3603 (clear) are the good choices for tight bend radii.

Is there an industry standard OD size that will ensure compression fittings will fit on most waterblocks without the need for adapters?

I heard the Primochill Pro were the best out there. Tygon is even better than the Primochill for clear color?

Some of the old blocks can't take 3/4" OD compression fittings, but were surmounted by using a compression fitting along with a 45 degree angle fitting. Almost all the new blocks can take the biggest compression fittings side-by-side. Only the universal GPU/chipset blocks are restricted to smaller compression fittings. If you are using universal GPU/chipset blocks you can opt for 1/2" barbs for the blocks and smaller compression fittings everywhere else.

For clear, Tygon is the best you can get.

Edit: Remember tubing size has almost no effect on your flow rates, especially your temps. Just pick the size you think looks the best or fits your build.

Would clear tygon plasticize (get cloudy) over time?

If I want black (or colored) tubing, why not go for tygon over primochill?

7/16" tubing on 1/2" barbs is absolutely perfect. It's a very tight fit. To fit the tubing, you need to dip the ends in hot water and then force it into the barbs. Once the tubing is in and it cools, it will form a leak-free seal. In fact, it's so sealed that you need to get a knife to remove the tubing by slitting it if you ever want to remove it from the barbs.

Add wormdrive clamps on to your fittings and that thing will NEVER leak. Have a look at my signature for a link to photos of my build for reference (I use 7/16" tubing on 1/2" barbs with wormdrive clamps). I also use anti-kink coils along the tubing for extra UV lighting effect and for its main purpose - anti-kinking. Works perfectly!

If you thoroughly clean out your radiator before use to ensure all the flux is removed, and you use an all copper loop with pure distilled water and the appropriate amount of PT-Nuke then clear tygon will not get cloudy over time. I've seen pictures of clear tygon loops looking perfect after 2.5 years of use with the same water the entire time.
