Right... Adwords is completely in house, and the only data advertisers have access to is a non-personally identifiable location, for analytical purposes.

Yeah, a lot of companies say that. But, trust me, they have a looooot of data on you! I was surprised when I looked up myself

Although, it was quite funny when it had logged me on a proxy and thought I was from some far off land

Is it me or did 1984 get it wrong? It's not governments we will be tracked/monitored by but corporate entities. I remember seeing Minority Report and laughing about the eye scan thing. Now I am scared that it will become reality. I mush rather not have anyone tracking me like that.

EDIT: Is it ironic that the banner ad now is GOOGLE ADWORDS?

According to the article they are just trying to build a database of WiFi hot spots. I find this hard to believe. It also said that Google claimed to not have anything that could track you, but apparently the data is attached to a personal identifier number that is associated with your particular phone. It's bad enough when you're being tracked in any way, but it's far worse when companies feel the need to lie about it.

I'm mostly indifferent on the whole issue. I mean if I were to lose my phone, I'd be more concerned about the banking and email apps being accessed than I would about the locational data. And even then, I'd just change all my passwords and such or remotely wipe the phone.

Okay, so a random person knows where I live because he found my phone....what's he going to do now? Rob me? Kill me? What? None of that really makes sense.

The outrage over being tracked is more about the fact that it's happening at all, not the so-called negative consequences of someone finding it (in my opinion).

It's not that the data is stored on the phone, it's that it's transmitted to a central location, out of your control, and can identify where you are and where you've been.
