Could my memory be the bottleneck

post #1 of 3
Thread Starter
I'm sure most of you know the whole Fermi GPU usage issue, which seems to be sporadic at best for different users.

But it seems most people with the least issue have at least an i5 or i7.

I have heard from multiple people that my Q9550 should be just fine, but I'm just not getting the performance in games. Could my ddr2-800 be the bottleneck or is it semi-irrelevant?

I don't think your memory is the bottleneck. DDR3 1600 with good timings would probably only get you an additional 4fps max. Memory speed makes more of a difference in content creation, video editing, etc.

What games do you play ?

Do you have your Q9550 overclocked ?

I'm asking these two questions because, depending on the game you might:

- be playing games that are only optimized for dual cores; in that case a faster dual core will give you more FPS. Crysis, for example, will favour higher clockspeeds instead of a quad-core (it will use a Quad-Core, but not as efficiently.);

If that is the case, try overclocking your CPU.

In games that take advantage of Quad-Cores, for example, Metro 2033, you'll see a big benefit in going Quad-Core, even if you compare it to a slightly faster Dual Core, in which case you can leave the CPU as-is.

In either case, even a modest overclock on the Q9550 is possible at stock voltage. I can run mine at 3.2Ghz at stock voltage (8x 400FSB). I can actually run it at 3.4 Ghz at stock voltage, although I still haven't tested it for more than half an hour.
