New Sandy Bridge build - Silicon Ice™ (Advice needed) - Page 2

Thread Starter
sorry went to church after posting. just saw your replies now.

Audiophile : I'm NOT that hardcore audiophile, but I can appreciate the difference in sound quality. Currently my Altec Lansing FX5051 is down, so I'm running DT880s through Edge Headphone Amp through a rather old xtrememusic. I'm not TOO high end to consider custom speakers (or whatever), so max I go is Altec Lansing FX5051 or Logitech Z-5500.

I also had considered Lightnings, but they are non-reference and can't do water atm.

Also, 3x580 is OUT of my budget currently. Multi-monitor for work, yes, gaming probably not (no space on table).

I don't think I like pre-made kits. Hence, did not consider Hx0 by Corsairs.

I saw the Xigmatek Elysium review recently, though not sure how much it would cost to ship over here. It looks HUGE and water-cooling ready. Although I really want a window to see my innards (not mine, the PC's). Forgot to mention that in OP.

Any advise/help on the water-cooling stuff? This is my first time doing water-cooling so whatever I see are only from theory. Also HDD wise, F3/F4/Caviar Blacks?? Also I saw a review saying the C300 trumps many other SSDs (can't remember where now).

Oh, and the wait is killing me. Been waiting for over a year. Initially wanted to do this last year, but was busy (and got distracted). So this year I'm setting my foot down to it (plus I have the 3 month summer break now, not when 2011 comes out).

are you going to go higher than dual card sli? because if not, there won't be much point in getting more expensive than an asus p8p67 deluxe.

I may or may not. I like to keep options open.

Is that the only difference between M4E and P8P67 Deluxe?

Go for the 2600k and M4E for sure, although the P8P67 Pro/Deluxe will do just fine if you don't need the extra features on the M4E. Also get 2x GTX 580's in SLI, they'll tear through anything you throw at them on a single 30 inch monitor (EVGA ones are good). Grab x2 Samsung Spinpoint F3's in RAID0, and trust me you'll want an SSD for the OS and a few games/apps. On a high end rig like that, a normal HDD will drag your system down. The Corsair 800D is amazing for watercooling, and you'll have no problems fitting rads in there so I'd go with that.

As for watercooling, the parts you've decided on are good. An XSPC RS360 rad, Swiftech MCP355 Pump, EK blocks and whatever res you want will do great for a CPU/GPU loop. Good luck with your new build!

You cannot be serious on that last part, you mean RX360 right at that?

No this build facilitates atleast an rx 480. I'd prefer it have an rx 360 and an rx 240 (top of the 800 and front of the 800) for the best dissipation.

An rs360 couldn't even begin to handle any 2 gpu + CPU combination let alone a 580 sli!

Also if you buy an ssd, why the hell would you get raid 0?
Raid 1 and ssd makes sense. What happens when and if those drives fail? Raid 1 data redundancy ftw.

Because I have other backup options. My current PC is doing 3 TB so many data will be backed up on this PC after I get this new one.

Ok, for rads, I need 2?? But that's if I use the XSPC ones right? How are the other brands' dissipation (e.g. Black Ice or EK Rads)?

you mean crucial c300? The vertex 3 would win hands down. It's the fastest ssd made for consumer use. You would get something like twice the read/write speed of the c300 or pretty much nearly every ssds on the market.

oh right....the review i saw i think mustve been for standard HDDs with C300 put inside for comparison. No wonder I thought it was pretty good.

ok so it's clear Sandy Bridge tops the LGA1366 build.

Any comments on the Creative Titanium? or the F3s vs. Caviar Blacks?
