GTX 580 Will not install any driver. Please HELP!

Thread Starter
I just build my new computer and all is well with it....other then my GTX 580...I am using the crosshair iv extreme mobo so there is no vga port or anything to set up the video card like normal. When I turn on the machine it starts up just fine in VGA mode with my monitor plugged in to the GTX 580 va HDMI to my monitor. When I run the CD that came with the 580 it says it installs it fine and the resolution does go to the proper size. But shortly after, sometimes 30 seconds sometimes 3 minutes, the computer goes completely unresponsive. The keyboard/mouse do not work but the lights on the computer all stay normal.

When I restart in safe mode I go to device manager and I see that there is a device that does not have a driver assigned to it. It says "PCI Device". My GTX 580 is my only PCI device so it has to be it. When I look at the currently installed display device it has the GTX 580 driver installed on it, after manually selecting the default VGA driver I can start the computer up out of safe mode back in VGA mode.

I have downloaded several different versions of drivers for the 580 and they all do the same exact thing. I have tried to manually point the PCI device at every driver also and when I do that it says that "It has found a driver for this device but the driver selected is not supported by this version of windows." The driver I am selecting is for windows 7 64 bit, my OS is windows 7 64 bit....

I am all out of ideas and can't find any reports of anything like this happening anywhere.....ANY help or ideas would be GREATLY appreciated everyone.

The VGA is a PCI-Express device, if your PC doesn't see it you'll see it as "Standard VGA Adapter"; did you try the very latest drivers (270.61)? Another idea would be to format your computer and begin everything from scratch. Also, try using a DVI cable instead of a HDMI, just to be sure.

Can you test the GTX 580 in another computer (and DVI) with the latest 270.61 drivers? If you still have problems, it is likely a bad graphics card. I got similar problems on faulty Nvidia cards.

You shouldn't be using the CDs from the package, big no no since those drivers are outdated. I see you figured this out but you may need to use Driver Sweeper to get rid of the old drivers that are potentially causing issues. Grab the latest drivers here and see what that does for your situation after the sweep. If it doesn't help, report back here for more diagnostics biggrin.gif
