New System Build w/ PICS and disappointment

Thread Starter
So I am finally done with this setup as I dumped all this money to my machine just to find some disappointments... Reading reviews and specs, I buy everything I see such as the MB with SATA 6GB and USB 3.0 and X58 overclockability and features, big case, best PSU available, great Intel deal, 2X SSD Raid 0, and two of the fastest single GPU cards available...
Now that I am done for the moment, there are a few problems. I am looking into an enthusiast gaming machine that will be future proof for a while so here are my problems especially for owners looking into a new enthusiast build...

Foremost, the biggest problem is my motherboard... the Asus P6X58D-E... I loved the specs, 3X PCI 16X slots, USB 3.0 and Sata III 6GB/s. If you're an enthusiast like me and want the latest and greatest technology, I am sorry but this is not the right motherboard for you as good as it sounds on paper specs(for my setup that is...)
The problem here is the SLI spacing... I bought this big a** case thinking it would be more than enough to fit 100 video cards and 100 HDD's in no problem, but that is not the case thanks to this MB. Looking at the pics, you see the setup where I cannot lower my second GTX 580 to make spacing for better cooling. The first pci slot on the case is rendered useless, while I got my SB sound card on the second pci slot. Then looking lower, seems like the GPU's are in the middle of the case... Note there is a third slot for the GPU, but if it's a dual slot taking GPU, it will not fit correctly into this case and I wanted to move my gpu down, but if I do that, the exhaust vent will be blocked and that gpu would be useless and I might as well just fry it at that point...

My second issue with this motherboard is the SATA III controller... the Marvel 9128 Sata 6GB controller.... this one here is funny because on the box it shows true SATA III connectors and the fact is, that it's not... What bought my attention to this is the new Vertex 3 SSD that supports SATA III connections. I am now reading reviews to find that the Vertex 3 SSD is too fast for my motherboard... Some of you all might ask why is this...? The Marvel 9128 uses two PCI-X lanes for data transfers(Wiki PCI-X and find that each lane does 250MB/s), so on paper thats 500MB/sec. In reality, these two lanes will get you roughly up to 300-400MB/sec which is exactly the speeds you will get with the Vertex 3 connected to the 6GB slot on this motherboard... and i'm talking about sequential read speeds. Read all the new reviews and on newer chipsets (Sandy Bridge or Rampage III motherboards w/ 9182; not 9128) uses 4 lanes to get the much higher transfer speeds...
Now reading into this, and wanting space for my graphics cards and faster Vertex 3 speeds, I need to sell my MB and buy this...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...lack%20edition

Computers are my hobby and I have to say that it sucks to keep up...
At least with that ROG MB, I can finally put my IPAD to use and overclock on the fly through bluetooth on this motherboard and read temps and such which is cool...
Anyone else stuck with my same dilemma with almost if not similar specs?
I do gaming, videos, and graphics and in the process of learning Adobe CS5...
I started writing this because I had to do lots of research to find my kinks and did so the harder way... Hope you all don't have to go through the same thing but overall, I am satisfied with my setup. I figure Sandy Bridge is faster at gaming, but the i7-970 is fast enough and I went too far into this build.....
That MB will solve my personal issues with my setup but at $600, thats the newer sandy bridge processor + the motherboard... Should I go all out and get that motherboard or wait? I know it matters mostly on my personal preference but I want to know, at this point, what would you all do? I am getting the Vertex 3 regardless, and believe this machine will last and keep up with next year until Ivy Bridge gets released....
And can't wait for the Asus 27" 120HZ 3d monitors to come out

Your cards are fine as long as your case has sufficient airflow. It's pretty normal to have that amount of space between two cards. It would be worth it more to just buy better cooler's for the cards if you're that dissatisfied. There's nothing honestly wrong with your rig, just that you're nit-picky, lol.

You could get the Big Bang X-power if you want the cards separated more?

Horsemama when you have that much stuff in the rig with all those fans etc that cable management is actaully pretty good IMO.

That is a very nice setup you got there. You should try to oc your processor to 4ghz. It wont take a lot of vcore for that. I have a i7 970 and a SB setup and I cant say one is better than the other for gaming or every day use. For video crunching, folding and multitasking the 970 kicks SB ass. There are people that might say otherwise but I think you did very good. Enjoy it bro!

Thanks you guys... that is actually my next step is to overclock the i7 970, but I cannot stand how loud the stock cooler is in performance mode... I was thinking of upgrading to a Corsair H70 and mount the radiator in the front to get it to 4GHZ(I hear these stock antec fans are better than the H70's)...
It did take me a while to get the cable management that good as I have a 4 port USB 3.0 front hub and that blue cable is only so long...
I just upgraded from a 750 watt PSU on the same system and now 3dMark11 and Metro 2033 in particular actually have higher FPS and don't have a lag because of the limited wattage...
Here are some Crysis Warhead benchmarks... including my older setup with i7 920 and GTX 295....
