Rift last me till Tera? - Page 3

So believe it or not, Ive never played any kind of MMORPG in my life, wanted to play some sort of MMORPG for a long time. I tried WOW about a year ago, for that 10-day free thing or is it 15? whatever. Anyways. In the short period of time that I did get to play it, I lvld to 40, joined a guild and really wanted to get in to it, but the graphics constantly upset me, the movement of characters was to cartoony, gameplay, mechanics, and most of it wasnt enough to keep me playing after the free trial.

On the other side, Rift is gorgeous, the gameplay, mechanics, the rifts, rewards, warfronts, dungeons... I love it. I dont know what will keep me away from this game. Everytime I log in I marvel at the world of telara, this is an awesome game.
Some of you say its the same as WOW, and it copied WOW in ever way, well for someone like me its not, and even if it was, didnt WOW copy everything that came before it as well?
But like I was saying, Im not an mmorpg expert from the past, I got in to this type of game in the last 12 months, and for me, its an experience that will stay with me for a long time.

I just ended my RIFT account. I was brought in by the no-addon, and millions of class combos...but third party programs for DPS/HPS (damge per second/healing per second) made it into WoW Jr. Quickly the fun was sucked out of the game as "best DPS class"es appeared, and the cookie cutter builds popped up and were REQUIRED to raid. I was first 50 mage on my server, and now I wish I just had not even bothered.

How you felt about Rift, is how I felt about WoW back in '06 when I first got into it. However after playing it longer and longer, having nothing new or unique ever introduced, every expansion worst than the last, I had enough of that grindy type of game and will never go back to anything like that again. It ends up creating a hostile type of gaming environment among players due to it's philosophy and the way the game is designed. It makes players hate each other for kill stealing, camping, ninja'ing drops, and just being overall douchey people. It causes unnecessary stress, and ends up just not being fun.

It would be one thing if the game had no subscription fee, but if you expect people to pay $15 a month, or really $180 per year, you have some responsibility to your subscribers, and product to produce something unique and engaging. Not just replicating what's been done to death before. I don't feel Blizzard, and subsequently TRION have achieved that.

Rift is a shiny skin with prettier textures and particle systems than WoW (being a 7 year old game).

But hey, if you love it, more power to you! That's what games are for, to enjoy them.

Rift PvP is much different then WoW PvP.
Rift Pve, is different then WoW PvP, not by much.
Quest are similiar, but I prefer Rift quest.

In retrospect, Rift Pve is similiar to WoW Pve, but the PvP is different.I'm only on Rift to kill people, I do enjoy the graphics and the pve isn't too bad, not as bad as WoW's at least.

"It's like World of Warcraft, but....." describes RIFT pretty well. played all the beta events and just stopped playing it recently. the last straw was literally perpetually lagging out of the game during phase 2 RoS. i had already grown bored of the majority of the gameplay and the lack of PvP balance was pretty bad. the major difference is pvp structure, pve is the same.

Ye, very little difference in pve.
(Nice way of describing the game)

Does it have the same Gather x / Kill x / Escort x quests as most MMOs? Check
Does it have the same endless grind to get gear? Check
Does it have the same style of play, same mechanics? Check
Does it have the same lackluster button mashing, unintuitive combat? Check
Does it have the same rush to max level before you can enjoy content? Check
Does it have the same Trinity for instances Tank/DPS/Healer requirements? Check (although done better than most games since you can have many versatile, easy to access builds within your class)

Unless you are some kind of moron - when you see that in a game, don't like that sort of thing in a game, you can quickly deduce that it isn't the game for you.
Hmm that sounds suspiciously like every MMO. Even the ones before WoW .... That post makes it sound like WoW invented the MMO genre. Personally I prefer RIFT over WoW. ( yes I have actually played both and continue to play RIFT). I'm not going to go into how each is different (or the same). Until you play a game for yourself you wont know which you like better. Maybe get a friend to give you a free weekend code for RIFT and give it a try . They have been giving those out pretty regularly here lately.

Next patch there adding in friend trials, which is May 4?
But, they might have a free weekend again.

backfat, just leave, you havent even played the game to know anything about it.

Just because a game uses the same mechanics, and same hotkeys does not make it the same game. How hard is that to understand.

I have played both, yes there are similarities, but no more than there is between wow and everquest, or warhammer.

The holy trinity i have found isnt even really neccessary. I have found that you can quite often hybrid your classes instead, There isnt a simply i gotta be a tank/healer/dps role, yes you need a healer, and you need someone to absorb the damage, but they can hybrid out and bring other roles to the party also, You dont have to have 1 person 100% tank focused, or 100% healer focused, go 40/60 and provide additional benefits to the party. i have done most of the expert content in a group of hybrid roles.

Never thought I'd find myself agreeing with you. The game uses a format another game uses. I guess that makes all FPS games a clone of Wolfenstein.

Rift actually goes a tad deeper than WoW did with the class system. While each Archtype is there, it still involves more strategy than shoving most of your talent points into one tree in order to be successful.
