No, I didnt mean it goes under 40. It never goes below 60, just at some points in the map during a heavy firefight it will drop to 50's, and as I found its the cause of GPU not being fully used.

Really? 50's? That's pretty standard if there's a lot of explosions going on and smoke all over the place.

Although nV cards are pretty famous for having GPU usage/low FPS issues in online BFBC2, in this particular case it's almost certainly a CPU bottleneck happening in those heavy scenes. 100% CPU usage, lowered FPS, lowered GPU usage ... the signs are all there I'm afraid.

It does indeed suck, but you've seen the sticky ...you are definitely not alone, tons of people have the same problem.

If you lower all the graphics settings, do you still end up with the same drops to the 50fps range in the same situations (and of course teh GPU usage will be even lower than it is now)? If so, you can pretty much be certain it's a BN.

Either that, or it's crappy drivers, or possibly just something related to the internet connection somehow. But CPU BN is for sure the most likely culprit.

Lastly, I dunno who told you that your CPU 'isn't supposed to bottleneck at all at stock', but that's a ridiculous statement for someone to make (I correct people who do so like every other day on OCN ).

Any CPU *can* bottleneck any GPU ... it just depends on the test/game, and the settings you run that test/game at.

Well in theory, if it did bottleneck at stock, it definitely should not at 3.7, right ?

There's some people reporting driver swaps fixed it for them, but I used MSi ones supplied with CD and now the WHQL 270.61 and still same.

It's weird. In games like Mafia 2 I get 100% GPU usage at all times.

Again, it depends on the game/test (this determines the degree of CPU dependency, i.e. how much work does the GPU require of the CPU per frame rendered), and the settings you run it at (this determines the FPS that the card is capable of and hence how fast the GPU is requesting data from the CPU). It also of course depends on what's going on in the scene.

Every single frame ever rendered on your machine is a new opportunity for either the CPU or the GPU to act as the bottleneck. The actual hardware, what clocks they're at ... all these do is affect the *probability* of which part will act as BN on any given frame rendered.

Ergo, it's never a valid/correct statement to say "X CPU WILL/WILL NOT bottleneck Y GPU", because it's not a binary, 'yes/no' type of situation based solely on the hardware. It's entirely situational. You have to consider the test, and the settings, as well as the hardware.

Raising the CPU clock *reduces* the probability that on any given frame, the CPU will act as the limiting factor to performance. But there's no such thing as *removing* the possibility that the CPU could act as the limiting factor.

He's playing on 1680x1050 reso, people. I get 65-70 average on Bad Company 2 with an overclocked B55 (unlocked Ph II x2 555) and a Gtx460 @ 920/1840/2050. I always play on 1920x1080, 32xCSAA, no HBAO and high quality. I doubt he has that much crap on the background to make it that much of a bottleneck
