Dude, I totally hear ya. In fact this rig I've got now has been the same since August of last year, and even though I'm still 100% happy w/the performance, I still get 'the itch' to upgrade every week or so. And this 8 month span of using the same MB/Chip/memory/GPU combo is BY FAR the longest I've gone without an upgrade in many, many years.
Of course it 'helps' that my fiance hasn't been making any money for the past year so now I have to pay ALL the bills for both of us .. but that's another story. I stilll COULD upgrade if I really wanted to.
But here's my point: I think it really helps 'calm the itch' when you get yourself something that's really unique. In my present case, that is the 2x465 Limited Golden Edition cards. The copper coolers look SUPER cool, and they have the limited edition 'numbering' stamped onto the side ... plus of course they're 465's that unlock to full 470's.
I'm finding it's been a lot easier than usual to not
replace/upgrade these cards simply because there's nothing else out there that has the same uniqueness/coolness factor.
I've found that if I buy the average run-o-the-mill reference EVGA (or whoever) cards that have no uniqueness and are basically identical to what everyone and their brother already has, it ends up being really easy to part ways with them.
So while I admit that there's cards out there that I'd LIKE to upgrade to for various reasons (I'm a little intrigued ATM with the idea of getting 2x560 2GB cards, or getting a couple of 6950's to unlock
) when I ponder the idea of parting with the 'special' cards I have in order to get one of these other (pretty generic) setups ... I am quickly dissuaded from doing so.
Moral: wait if necessary, and try to make your next purchase something that's in some way 'unique' and 'special' ... something that you can get yourself attached to because it feels in some way irreplaceable.Edited by brettjv - 4/24/11 at 3:25pm
