Critique my first Overclock, also some questions.

Thread Starter
Okay so here it is. http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1784203

1) First off, I understand 1.51 is a little high on vcore but thats what I had to bump up to to run stable. Anything lower would give me bsods or lock up prime95, anything lower than 1.4v would fail to boot windows. If you think there is something I can do to lower this, I am willing to try. Is there any reason to try and keep going higher with the voltage I am already at, or should I call it quits at 4.0? I don't want to damage my chip. Temps are 25c idle/45c max while stressing.

2) My CPU/NB is at 2600mhz with 1.28v on the cpu/nb. I tried to get to 2800 but failed to boot windows with voltages 1.28-1.41v on the cpu/nb. Should I be changing the voltage on the NB voltage setting? I have been moving voltages on the CPU/NB voltage setting. Would like some pointers on this as well.

3) And number 3, Memory Timings. I know nothing about memory timings, I have them at 1600MHz and haven't touched the timings, I have noticed the motherboard must be changing them automatically when I have been boosting the speed. What should I do with these guys? Any numbers I should be running for gaming? If you guys have a good link where I can read about memory timings and what goes best with what, I would like to learn.

I appreciate any help or ideas to get the most out of it. I am not sure how much more headroom I have and do not want to damage the chip for a little increase. Let me know if I left some crucial info out, Thanks guys.

1) Hmmm, 1.51 is way too high for 24/7 use in my opinion. My old 1055T did 4Ghz with 1.45. Try lowering it back down 1.45 and tighten up your timings on your ram. 11-11-11-29 is horrendous. Try running your ram at rated specs.

2) Same thing happened to me on my 790fx board. It would boot at 2800Mhz but no matter what voltage I give it, it would always bsod on me. So I just left it at 2600Mhz at 1.3. Its still an nice increase from 2000Mhz. I'm not sure about the NB voltage though.

3) lol The answer is in #1

I can try dropping back down but like I said, it either locked up or bsod while testing with prime95. People have told me 1.51 is okay for 24/7, is this wrong?

As far as ram timings go, like I said, I know nothing about the timings or what I should go to, any suggestions or a link I can read to help? My RAM is rated at 1600, you think I should back down?

EDIT: The closest decent stable overclock I have gotten with lower vcore is 3.8 at 1.47 I believe.

1.51 should be fine for 24/7 as long as the chip stays cool, but it is approaching the limits
post #5 of 14
Imo I think its too much. People have their own opinions as well. What are the load temps like when its at 4Ghz? And 3.8Ghz at 1.47 isn't really good. 3.8Ghz should be able to be acheived at stock clocks without any problem. You probably have a bad chip.

1600 is just fine for AMD and you should leave it to concentrate on the timings. As for setting it up, I have no idea how your BIOS is organized. Mind taking some pictures of the RAM section?

Try looking in the AMD RAM section for guides. I have been reading randomly on the net about RAM

EDIT: ^RAM master will help you more than me

Temps are 25c idle/45c max while stressing at 4.0.

I know where and how to change the RAM timings, i just don't know what they should be set to. So I just pretty much need to know some timings, I can put them in. I'll check out the RAM section when I get a chance.

As far as having a bad chip. What should I do, return or live with it ha?

As long as those temps don't get past 60 then your good. (I find it really hard to believe that a Frio can Keep a 1090t at 45 at load )

For the timings, you need to set CL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS to your rated specs ex. 7-8-7-24 for me.

Oh, and I thought you couldn't return a processor if it works or if you rip the seal and open the package 0.o

Ive been very impressed with the frio for its price. It's still in the top 5 heatsinks for AMD chips on frostytech.com

Where can I get my rated specs, sorry for the noob questions.

1st. Most 1090T's can run 4.0GHz around 1.4v or slightly lower. So yes the 1.51 seems very high to me. Have you tried running something like 250 Ref Clock and a 16x multiplier? Some do better this way, rather than a multiplier only approach. Check this thread http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...ing-guide.html as it will give you the basics, plus give you a good path to follow.

2nd. Your CPU/NB voltage seems low, the max CPU/NB voltage with a 1090T is 1.55v same as the Vcore. For 3000MHz NB Freq you may need 1.37 - 1.45v especially running 8GBs of ram. Raising the actual NB voltage is for the chipset and usually for when exceeding 260-300MHz (ref clock), but a slight increase might benefit you but only as a last resort. (1.2-1.25v)

3rd. As far as memory you can worry about tightening it later. Set the timings manually in bios to manufacture specs along with the Dram voltage. The only reason the bios would change these is they're not manually entered which can cause this issue you're having. The fewer items left on auto in the bios the better off you'll be.

Always make small changes in just one area at a time, sounds like you need to study the link above, keep notes of settings and refer back to the thread as much as needed. OCing takes time and patience. If I can help you any further feel free to PM me as I'm always happy to help those that ask for it.
Good luck and have fun!
