HT on or off..?

Thread Starter
I always believed that HT would affect gaming in a negative way.. Atleast that was what i read 1 year ago or so. But i never tested it myself.

After i saw these:

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ield_bloom.png

http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=1094982

Im wondering if i should enable my HT. Im running my i7 860 at 4.2 with HT off - with HT on im only able to run 4 GHz.

What do you think?

Im using my PC for like 70% gaming and rest allround, lots of WinRaR tho and a little encoding.

Btw, does HT affect 3Dmark 2011 score? I know it does in Vantage, but im not sure about 2011

I seriously doubt leaving HT on will decrese your gaming performance that much that's it's actually benificial to turn HT off.

If turning it off increases benchmark scores, then just turn it off when you're benching.

Nah I'd leave HT on.

You say you're doing encoding and winrar, so keep on the HT, as encoding utilizes the extra threads.

If you didn't want HT, why did you get an i7 in the first place. You could've got an i5 760.

Yes, "HT on" does get a higher CPU score

edit, I'm going by a 2500K score against my 2600K score
And I'd guess it's the HT making my score better clock for clock!

I'll go test, and I'll be back

HT doesn't affect real gaming performance (not benching) because the games simply don't support it..keep it off so your temps stay lower, overclock more due to lower temps, and profit

I gonna try it soon. The only downside is im losing 200 MHz witch will affect the gaming part (not much tho, but still) With HT on, the temps go way up compared to off, so 4 GHz is max with this H50 -.-

lobe3s: The price was pretty much the same. I think i payed 15-20€ more for i7 860 and the resale value is higher, so i went with the i7 (also i wasnt sure if i wanted HT or not)

Some games benefit from hyper thread but very few.And it only matters with dual cores. It's true if you have ht turned off you spent a 100 extra dollars for nothing. That is why I didn't get an i7 because there isn't any performance increase except encoding video. If you don't do that then you bought the wrong chip.

Yep i know It's because i used to only game on this PC, but now i do everything on it.. So thats why im in doubt

The HT On scores is generally higher here (esp. Far Cry 2 and Hawx:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=1094982

But again i don't know how he tested, sounds strange that HT gives anything in games idd
