Bizzare performance

When I originally built my PC I had an one EVGA GTX 460 SC from an upgrade on a previous build. Considered using it for this build I decided I wanted a bit more power and Ati 6870's were a good deal so I ended up doing a 6870 crossfire.

Fast forward a few months and I really wanted to use Arch Linux on my main PC again and ati on linux is a no go...so I thought well maybe I'll give the old gtx 460 a try see how it is and maybe upgrade to a 580 or something in a few months and sell the 6870's.

Heres the weird thing though with the GTX 460 @ 875/1750/1900 1.0v I cannot tell the difference between it and my CF setup at 950/1150. Benchmarks are hugely lower but I don't see it. Some games with older engines like portal 2 even seem better no occasional stutter no occasional flickering shadow. I even boot to windows slightly quicker.

Is there any good explanation for this? Or am I just not picky when it comes to fps? I've tried Metro 2033, AvP, Crysis 2 and Portal 2 and all performed the same as the CF (or better with Portal 2) with all settings max. I'm no hardcore gamer but I was expecting a bigger difference. I mean one 6870 should outperform it let alone 2.

This is not a troll post I just really find it weird.

If you got vsync enabled you will cap your framerates at 60 fps. If not your performance should be 60 fps or better, at least in Portal 2 etc. If you havent already, get MSI Afterburner or something similar and monitor your gpu usage. With my 580 I use only 25% of my gpu on average with 16xaa enabled and everything else maxed. Its strange you didnt notice a difference in Metro however.

I think if you benched it would show an increased fps, although I think I know what you mean. The difference between fps and perceived smoothness are two very different things altogether. Some cards I've owned have just felt wrong, but I have been unable to point out exactly why. Even now, when heavy aa is enabled things doesnt actually feel like 60 fps when playing at 1920x1200, especially when turning around. While monitoring I can clearly see a stable 60 fps. I think this has something to do with vertical sync, but I cannot live without vs as tearing is almost as annoying as stuttering.

Also, the reason I have chosen to stay away from sli or crossfire is the potential micro-stutters. I hate stuttering...

Yeah I monitor GPU usage with aida64 and lcdscreen on my keyboard. In Metro and Crysis2 it uses 98-99% portal 2 is only like 45%. Which is interesting because I'd get 99% usage with CF. Benchmarks show much lower fps but over all it seems smoother.

I less weird issue too, for example about 50% of the time the screen would not display any of the POST bios screens and nothing would show up until the windows login screen. This even happened with 1 6870.

I am using an EVGA motherboard is it some how possible that it's just better optimized for Nvidia cards.
